Dylan Ernst ’17

How did you explore your interests and decide on a major?

I took a variety of classes my first two years and ultimately found my interest in economics and finance. I chose economics specifically to join a rigorous and reputable program with great professors.

What were your responsibilities as an intern?

I joined alongside Travelers’ new credit research associate analysts. I was assigned to a senior analyst and covered consumer products. I researched credits to help determine whether we should buy their bonds. I spent a lot of time training with Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) material, and we even had case study competitions.

What was the most rewarding part of your internship?

I presented a 10 minute credit review to all of the associates, analysts, and portfolio managers on my last day. I was amazed at how financially-fluent and confident I had become.

What did you learn about yourself during your internship?

I learned that I enjoyed digging through financial statements and meeting with outside analysts and managers to determine the genuine story of a company or a municipality.

What role has your internship played in shaping your career path?

My internship has essentially shaped my career path 100% as I received a return offer. I’m very fortunate and eager to begin a career on the buy-side and pursue the CFA designation.

Do you have any advice for students completing internships in your field?

Network! You can never have too many connections. It only takes one close acquaintance to change your path. Also, take several accounting classes. It is a hard skill that will help in finance interviews and will pay dividends during your entire career.
