Study Abroad and Domestic Study Away

Notes from Abroad: Alison in Spain

Alison Cooperrider ’19 is a Spanish major studying with the Spanish Studies Abroad program in Sevilla, Spain

Hi! My name is Alison Cooperrider, and I am a senior at Lake Forest College studying Spanish language and culture. I am currently studying with Spanish Studies Abroad (SSA) in Sevilla, Spain, and sadly, my adventure here ends in less than a month! Living here has been a dream, so I am not ready to leave.

From weekend trips to Madrid and Barcelona to visiting local museums in Sevilla (and traveling through the rest of Europe), I never have a dull moment. While I have a lot of time for travel with SSA and on my own, classes are also an important part of the program. One of my favorite classes is about Spanish gastronomy that includes learning about regional diets and food products but also taste testing some such as chocolates, cheeses, olive oils, and much more.

The day to day life here in Sevilla is a breath of fresh air. A great way to relax between the traveling and studying is partaking in the café culture that the locals love and that I, too, now love. The best part is that I am able to practice my Spanish with almost anyone in public, which has helped me to improve my language skills since arriving here.

I have become more independent and confident in myself in many different aspects. The teachers, administrative staff, and friends I have made have been encouraging and empowering on this challenging (but great) journey, and I could not be more grateful for this opportunity of a lifetime.
