Study Abroad and Domestic Study Away

Notes from Abroad: Alejandra in Spain

Alejandra Ocampo ’20, a double major in Education and Spanish, is studying at the Spanish Studies Abroad program in Seville, Spain.

I’m Not Finished Thanks to the award of the Ingrid H. and George L. Speros scholarship for study abroad, I am living a once in a lifetime experience in Seville, Spain. I never thought I would have the opportunity to study in a different country nonetheless be able to experience different cultures firsthand. With two months left of my studies abroad program, I have decided that I am not finished taking in all the culture that surrounds Spain. I am not finished learning about the lives and experiences that other people around the world have. Everyone’s story is so much different from one another and it amazes me. I learned that just like in Mexico, familial bond is one of the most important characteristics of a Spaniard family. Every day for lunch and dinner my host family and I sit together and eat while we watch the news. In total, we are a family of seven with a lot of different opinions and very! different perspectives of life. The Spaniard family focuses on acknowledging that everyone has a different opinion and embracing our differences. I love every aspect of my life here and I am not finished educating myself about other cultures. I am not finished learning about myself. I have matured so much in just one month. I never thought I would have the confidence to be able to travel alone and here I am, booked a solo flight to Paris and Rome a couple of days ago. Traveling alone will give me the chance to indulge in myself fully. I am ready to make my own mistakes and celebrate my own triumphs. Even though I consider myself independent, I still feel like I rely on my peers. With that being said, I am not finished getting the exposure I get from people, culture and history that is outside of my comfort zone. I cannot wait to share my experiences with my future Spanish high school students and encourage them to take some risks, be open minded and learn about the world.
