Trustee Award for Teaching Excellence: Janet McCracken

Professor of Philosophy Janet McCracken receives the Trustee Award for Teaching Excellence at the College’s 140th Commencement ceremony on May 12.

Recipients of the Trustee Award demonstrate campus leadership and provide significant contributions to the life of the College community. McCracken does just that through the broad range of courses she teaches, which inspire students to expand their minds by creating and debating ideas.

“Professor McCracken is one of the best people I met at the College and possibly anywhere else,” philosophy major Grace Baumann ’18 said. “She patiently stuck with me while I struggled to commit to a major and encouraged me to explore my interests. Without her reassurance and unparalleled expertise in her field, I would not have considered philosophy as a potential major and definitely would not have found my way into the Writing Center, where I worked for three years.”

In addition to holding the positions of professor and Chair of Philosophy, McCracken also guides students who choose to pursue a self-designed major. Serving the College for over 25 years, McCracken has held several positions as well as received a number of awards for her keen intelligence, exceptional work ethic, and dedication to College, President Stephen Schutt said.

“Over the years, Janet has recruited at least 20 members of the College’s current faculty, oversaw development of at least a dozen new majors and minors, and established joint programs with prestigious graduate schools,” Schutt said.
