Off-Campus Study

Notes from Abroad: Audra in England

Audra Barrella ’19 is an English writing major with a minor in Theater studying in London, England.

Program Name and Location: ISEP Direct-University of Roehampton-London

Why hello there! My name is Audra Barrella and I’m an English writing major at Lake Forest. After I’m done with my degree, I plan on pursuing my dream of acting on TV and film. I don’t think words could ever express how much fun and how much I am learning here in London at the University of Roehampton. I have already done so many things in the city and am even now preparing for a trip to Stonehenge tomorrow as a part of the social program that I had the option to pay for as a part of my host university. There is just so much to do on and off campus! For instance, my university is split into four unique colleges, each with a different background. Sound a lot like Hogwarts? Well, it gets even better because those four colleges compete in a College Cup! I have already helped my college gain two of their three victories and we currently are first place! (Go Southland Sharks!) We also have so many things going on that it’s sometimes hard to find a minute to kick your feet up and take in a nice, deep breath of the crisp London air. And that’s just on campus! Off campus, I have been with friends into the city and joined my class on field trips! That program I mentioned earlier? They took us on a riverboat tour to Greenwich, the Center of the University where east meets west. (Just saying it makes me feel like I’m in the middle of some kind of movie or book! Also, if you were to watch Thor: The Dark World, the final battle took place at the university there where I was for the tour. Tiny bit of history there.) On top of that, I have traveled to the famous address of Sherlock Holmes, strolled into Kings Cross Station where a certain boy with magical abilities was, and walked into the palace where arguably the most famous person alive resides. As I close up my note, I’d like to make a quick thanks to Mr. William H. Toner who created the Toner Prize. I am so humbled ! to have been awarded such a scholarship! I have so much more e! xploring ahead of me that I wonder what will happen next! Time for me to jump on the Tube and see where my next stop lies! As we sometimes say here in London, ta ta!
