Eric Avila ’17: My Journey with Lake Forest College

I am honored to be a part of the first-ever Thank-a-Thon Series highlighting my Lake Forest experience with you.

So here it goes…my story…

To begin my journey, I need to rewind to when I was in high school.

I thought then that going to college was something impossible for me. All I knew about college at the time was that it was really expensive and that my family wouldn’t be able to help me pay for my tuition. Fortunately, I received the College Bound Opportunities Scholarship given to high-achieving students to help students pursue their dreams.

Given this, I applied to Lake Forest College and requested additional scholarship support. As a result, my hard work in high school paid off because I was accepted to Lake Forest College and received the financial aid that I needed to attend.

Now, as a Lake Forest College student, I am happy to be surrounded by students from all over the world and to be taught by great faculty who have challenged me academically. They have taught me that if I want something, I have to work hard to obtain it. These challenges make me a better person because I have proven to myself that I can overcome anything.

I will never forget the people who have helped me achieve my college dream. Because of my journey and those who supported me, I chose to major in sociology and anthropology with the goal to become a counselor. I know there are many young high school students who face the same problem I did, and I want to be able to inspire them.

Thank you for taking the time to hear my story, but more importantly, thank you for supporting students like me.

With gratitude,
