Exploring global careers

Students from a variety of majors met with experts who work with organizations that enrich global communities during a special panel on September 21.

The goal of Global Careers was “to bring an array of experts to help students explore global opportunities and professions for all areas of study,” Associate Director of the Career Advancement Center Smret Smith explained.

Students heard from panelists Katy Smithy, marketing manager for Greenheart International; Gerald Hankerson, outreach coordinator with Council on American-Islamic Relations; and Nelly Ingraham, deputy director, Midwest Region with U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

Andrea Lorch ’17 also joined the panel to share her recent experience abroad on the Critical Language Scholarship: one of the nation’s top immersion programs through the U.S. Department of State. Lorch was happy to participate in the panel “to give advice to students and encourage people to take advantage of the opportunity that I am truly grateful to have had,” she said.

After the event, students and panelists stayed and forged connections. “Each panelist has had Lake Forest College interns work alongside them to develop programs and initiatives and we are looking to continue these partnerships,” Smith said.

Alexander Balizado ’19 found the event to be a great opportunity to network with professionals. “The highlight for me was the opportunity to talk to the panelists individually and connect with them,” he said. “This was a great way to get ahead in the internship race before it even starts.”

The panelists were equally pleased. “Thank you for a wonderful evening,” Ingraham said. “Your students are impressive and it was so energizing to talk with them.”

Global Careers was co-sponsored by the Office of Intercultural Relations and the Career Advancement Center for Global Fest.
