Study Abroad and Domestic Study Away
Notes from Abroad: Caroline in Prague
Notes from Abroad is a new feature on the Off-Campus Programs website, in which we highlight small snippets of a student’s experience. This week’s feature is from Caroline Kirsch’17, a Finance major and SOAN minor currently studying abroad in Prague.
My name is Caroline Kirsch and this past semester, I was granted the most life changing experience that I have encountered thus far in life. I have been able to call Prague, in the Czech Republic, my home for the past month, with 3 more months to go. Over this short time I have learned more about myself and done more things, than I have ever done in my life. Each day there has been a new discovery and adventure that I would not have experienced if I stayed in the states. Even though I have been to Germany on an exchange program before I came to Prague, my experience here has been very different. One thing that I really love about the classes is how hands-on each class is. For example, in my German-Jewish Literature class, we do not just read the works of famous authors, we also take field trips to where the stories were written along with where the authors lived and grew up. Studying abroad in the Czech Republic has also given me a firsthand look at how different economic systems work, which I would not have realized from just taking classes back in the states. I have also learned a lot outside of the classroom. Since being here, I feel like I have become more aware of my surroundings and what is going on around me. Not only that, but I have learned that it is good to experience things by yourself, and if you want to do something you should do it. The most noticeable difference that I have had a harder time transitioning to is the laundry system. Many places like my dorm have hanging racks instead of dryers, which makes for a different experience for doing laundry. Overall, my experience here has been the most amazing experience and I would not have been able to do this without the help of the Margret Thomson Pavelka Scholarship.
