Zeller wins Outstanding Publication Award
Assistant Professor of Religion Ben Zeller’s exploration of Heaven’s Gate and the 1997 mass suicide of its members received the 2015 Outstanding Publication Award from the Communal Studies Association.
The association presents the award for a single published book, popular or scholarly, that it considers an outstanding contribution to the understanding of communal societies.
In Heaven’s Gate: America’s UFO Religion, Zeller explores the deaths of 39 members of the California religious group, which focused on transcending humanity and the Earth, and seeking salvation in the literal heavens on board a UFO.
