Uncovering Chicago history

Chicago Collections’ inaugural exhibition, Raw Material: Uncovering Chicago’s Historical Collections, opens August 7 at Harold Washington Library Center in Chicago.

Lake Forest College is a member of the Chicago Collections Consortium, which collaborate, uniting their resources, to offer access and exciting learning experiences to both the general public and academic researchers.

The exhibit features a rich display of personal, cultural, and historical artifacts, including photographs, letters, diaries, and other diverse items. The objects tell stories linking Chicago’s past to the intimate, personal experiences of life in Chicago.

Guest curator Riva Feshbach hopes the exhibit “inspires visitors to imagine what new stories these collections can help them tell.”

This is the first public program for the organization’s flagship initiative, Explore Chicago Collections—a free, centralized, Web-based search engine and record-finding tool that will allow researchers, teachers, students, and the public to readily locate more than 100,000 maps, photos, letters, and other archival material at member institutions throughout the Chicago area.

Harold Washington Library Center is located at 400 S. State Street.
