Off Campus Students

Library services for students in off campus programs

All off-campus students

Students in programs abroad, domestic out of state, as well as commuter students:

Books:
If you are attending a university outside of Illinois, you will need to use the library on that campus.

Databases for Journal Articles:

  • Only use links on our library’s web pages, such as Databases A-Z. Login with your College username and password.  Use “Check Lake Forest College” or “Find It” to download articles or to request articles via Interlibrary Loan.
  • If you have not already done so, log into Tipasa to request articles.

Google Scholar:

  • To access the complete article that you find in Google Scholar:

    1. Either:
      Use our Google Scholar institution link:
      link.lakeforest.edu/googlescholar
      or any link to Google Scholar on the library website.

      Or:
      If you are off campus and not using our Google Scholar institutional link:
      1. At scholar.google.com, in the top left corner, click the menu icon.
      2. Click the gear wheel icon to go to Settings.
      3. Click Library links.
      4. Search for Lake Forest College and check the boxes.
      5. Click the blue Save button.
    2. On the search results page:
      • Click any link on the right, including “Check Lake Forest College.”
      • If there are no links to the right of an article,
        below the article title, click  Google Scholar More icon,
        then click “Check Lake Forest College” to get to a populated interlibrary loan request form.

    To export Google Scholar references to EndNote Web:
    In the Google Scholar search results, below the article:

    1. Click Google Scholar cite icon
    2. Choose RefMan.

     

  • Create Bibliographies
    Store references used for research papers and format your bibliography and citations.

    • Use EndNote Web
      • Set up an EndNote Web account when you are on campus, OR
      • Ask a Librarian to set up your EndNote Web account.
      • After your EndNote Web account is set up, you can access it from anywhere on the planet, but you must log in to it from on campus at least once each year.
    • Ask a Librarian for help with bibliographies and citations.
    • Note: When you change your Lake Forest College password, your EndNote Web password will not automatically change.

Storage space to securely back up your files

  • Campus network storage:
    Whenever you log in to a computer on campus you have access to the “U” drive, or your area of the network where you can store files. From off campus, first download the VPN, then follow these directions to connect to the U drive.
  • Microsoft’s OneDrive:
    When you are logged into your email at mail.lakeforest.edu
    • At the top of the email window, click OneDrive.
    • Click “upload” to store files on your OneDrive or click “new” to create a new online MS Office document.
  • Contact the IT Help Desk if needed: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 847-735-5544.

Change my network/email password

  • Go to www.lakeforest.edu/password and follow the prompts.
  • Contact the IT Help Desk if needed: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 847-735-5544.

Students in Chicago

(“In the Loop,” ACM program students in Chicago, or commuter students in Chicago)

Books:

  • Select any I-Share pick-up library (see illustration) that is conveniently located for you, such as Roosevelt University or Columbia College.
  • You can also walk into any I-Share library and check out books using your College ID.

Commuter Students

Commuter students or any students who are temporarily off campus, but within Illinois, who want to access library resources should follow the guidelines above.  I-Share books can be delivered to an I-Share library close to home, if you prefer:

  • Select any I-Share pick-up library that is conveniently located for you, such as Roosevelt University or Columbia College.
  • You can also walk into any I-Share library and check out books using your College ID.
