US Census Guide

Government Information

Background Info

The US Constitution requires that a population count be taken every ten years to determine the number of Congressional Representatives and the amount of federal taxes each state is assigned. Over the decades, the United States Census has evolved to include not only the number of US residents but also other data primarily on population and housing but often also some on business/economics. Types of population and housing information may include race, marital status, number of rooms in the home, and so on. Business information might include manufactures by state. (See US Census Bureau: History for more information.)

This guide includes:

  • links to online US Census data and maps and
  • an overview of print US Census materials at Lake Forest College
  • print Census materials included in this guide can be found in the Reference Area on the main floor, unless otherwise indicated

Check the catalog for call numbers and availability of census materials. Some items may be in Special Collections on the lower level of the library. Not all of our census materials are included in the catalog. If you would like assistance, ask a librarian.

Two important points:

  • The useful Census of Population and Housing website has links to some online census data (including some maps) organized by census year from the 2010 Census back. Information not included in our print collection might be found here.
  • The demographics of specific neighborhoods may be covered by more than one census tract; census tracts are usually not equivalent to named neighborhoods, townships, or community areas.

  • American Community Survey: America is Changing, and so is the Census (Short sample state statistics from the 2005 American community survey)

Important to note: The 2010 Census program has made changes from former censuses, the most significant of which is the absence of the long form survey (Summary File 3). This form had questions regarding income, education, occupation, disabilities, etc. This has been replaced by the American Community Survey, an annual survey of the Census program that covers these same topics. The Missouri Census Data Center (MCDC) provides a good introduction to the differences of the 2010 Census from former counts.
