Circulation Policies for Books and Media

These policies are specific to material from the Donnelley and Lee Library of Lake Forest College, circulating to Lake Forest College students, faculty, and staff

Book Circulation Policies for Lake Forest College library materials

Lake Forest College students, faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate thesis students, emeritus faculty, and trustees:
  • Unlimited borrowing for books and government documents
  • Loan period of 21 days for students; to the end of current semester for faculty and staff
  • Up to 10 renewals
  • No daily overdue fines
  • Lost item status and fines are added after items are 29 days overdue; replacement fines will be waived upon return of item(s), provided they are in good (undamaged) condition.
Lake Forest College alumni and Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Public Library patrons:
  • 10 items from Lake Forest College (books and government documents) total may be borrowed at a time
  • No access to I-Share or ILLiad interlibrary loan borrowing
  • Loan period of 3 weeks
  • Up to 10 renewals
  • No daily overdue fines
  • Lost item status and fines are added after items are 29 days overdue; replacement fines will be waived upon return of item(s), provided they are in good (undamaged) condition.
  • May not borrow media items—CDs, DVDs, or videos
  • Alumni may borrow materials from curriculum collection.
  • Public library patrons may not borrow curriculum collection materials.
  • Reserve items may be used in-library only, provided no Lake Forest College student needs the items.
Patrons from other I-Share Libraries
  • Unlimited borrowing for books and government documents
  • Loan period of 4 weeks
  • Up to 3 renewals
  • Lost item status and fines are added after items are 29 days overdue; replacement fines will be waived upon return of item(s), provided they are in good (undamaged) condition, but fees may not. Items with “Lost” status cannot be renewed.
  • Reserve items may be used in-library only and provided no Lake Forest College student needs the items.

Media Circulation Policies

Lake Forest College faculty, staff, emeritus faculty, and trustees:
  • Unlimited borrowing for CDs, DVDs, and videos
  • Loan period of 1 month
  • 2 renewals
  • No daily overdue fines
  • Lost item status and fines are added after items are 29 days overdue; fines and fees will be waived upon return of item(s), provided they are in good (undamaged) condition.
  • Reserve items may be borrowed with permission of all applicable instructors.
Current Lake Forest College undergraduate, and graduate students:
DVDs and videos
  • Up to 2 DVDs or videos total
  • Loan period of 1 week
  • No renewals
  • Overdue fine of $1.00 per day per item (up to $10 per item) with 24 hr grace period
  • Lost item status and fines are added after items are 10 days overdue; replacement fines will be waived upon return of item(s).
  • Overdue fines will not be waived.
CDs
  • Up to 4 CDs at 1 time
  • Loan period of 2 hours; in-library use only
  • Students must leave an ID at the desk when borrowing CDs.
Media collection borrowing unavailable for:
  • Alumni
  • Participating I-Share institution patrons
  • Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Public Library patrons
  • Non-affiliated patrons
  • Exception: Materials from our media collection may be used within the library by unaffiliated patrons, alumni, I-Share patrons, and Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Public Library patrons.

Course and Permanent Reserves

  • All reserve items can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
  • Patrons must present a photo ID to check out reserves. No valuables will be accepted in lieu of a photo ID. The preferred form of photo ID for Lake Forest College students is their College ID.
  • Items on reserve for less than 1 full day may not be used outside of the library.
  • Due to high demand and limited availability, patrons are restricted to borrowing two reserve items (e.g. books, DVDs, CDs, readings, and study rooms) at time. Patrons may also borrow supplies (e.g. calculators, rulers, dry erase markers, etc.) as needed.
Course Reserve Materials – Various lending periods
  • Instructors may place materials on reserve at the Circulation Desk.
  • The loan period for these items is generally 2 hours, but occasionally may be 1-3 days—this will be noted on the item.
  • Extensions of the 2-hour loan period can be made for viewing a single DVD or video with a running time greater than 120 minutes.
  • An instructor who has placed an item on reserve may borrow that item through the end of the semester.
  • If more than one instructor places the same item on reserve, the loan period defaults to 2-hours for all borrowers.
Permanent Reserve – 2 hour loan period

Material such as high-demand journals & newspapers including:

  • The Economist
  • The New York Times
  • The Wall Street Journal

Rooms & Supplies

  • All study rooms and supplies listed below can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
  • Patrons must present a photo ID to check out reserves. No valuables will be accepted in lieu of a photo ID. The preferred form of photo ID for Lake Forest College students is their College ID.
  • Items on reserve for less than 1 full day may not be used outside of the library.
  • Due to high demand and limited availability, patrons are restricted to borrowing two reserve items (e.g. books, DVDs, CDs, readings, and study rooms) at time. Patrons may also borrow supplies (e.g. calculators, headphones, rulers, dry erase markers, etc.) as needed.
Study Rooms – 2 hour loan period
  • Students may check out a key for study room on a first-come, first served basis.
  • When done using the study room, all dry-erase writing surfaces must be erased, and furniture must be returned to its original location.
  • Study rooms must be vacated ten minutes prior to closing.
  • Please note: Students who have active fines for lost or damaged items may not be eligible to check out study rooms until the fines are paid or resolved.
  • Media Viewing Options
    • Patrons can check out DVD players (Region 1, multi-region, Blu-ray) and headphones at the circulation desk for 2 hours at a time
      –for longer-running films, exceptions can be made. 
    • Library classrooms are equipped with these devices:
      • 205, 211, and 221 have DVD and VHS players.
      • 203 and 208 have Blu-ray players
      • 237 has a DVD player in the computer
    • Classrooms used to view media must be vacated ten minutes prior to closing.
Supplies – 2 hour loan period

The following supplies are available for Students, Faculty and Staff to check out:

  • headphones
  • calculators
  • protractors
  • dry erase markers
  • Internet cables

Non-Circulating Materials

The following do not circulate to any patron group:

  • periodicals and bound journals
  • selected reference materials
  • microfilm
  • archives and special collections materials

Lake Forest Beach Passes

Parking passes to access the Lake Forest Beach are available for check out at the Circulation Desk. For more details, please click here.

  • Monday - Friday the beach is accessible to anyone by foot.
  • Lake Forest College students, faculty, and staff may access the beach by foot on the weekend by presenting their current College ID.

Lost or Damaged Items

Use of the Library

Anyone may use the library for:

Some restrictions:

  • During periods of high use (e.g. midterms and finals), study tables, carrels and computing workstations are reserved for Lake Forest College patrons. Non-affiliated patrons may be asked to leave.
  • The use of classrooms for viewing media may be used by community patrons provided no Lake Forest College patron needs one.
  • Due to licensing restrictions, some library databases and software may be used by Lake Forest College affiliated patrons only.
  • The library reserves the right to indefinitely suspend borrowing privileges to courtesy patrons.
