First-Year Experience

Our First Year Experience theme communities are designed to help you connect with the College, get involved in programming and activities, and foster community.   Participation in the First Year Success Series will help incoming students tackle some of the critical transition issues that can factor into success at the College.

Students involved with our specialized theme communities will engage in a variety of programmatic and social experiences in conjunction with the Residence Life staff and our partner offices.  The 2013-2014 FYE theme communities are Exploring Social Justice, Leading the Way, and Living Well.

Exploring Social Justice

The Exploring Social Justice community is open to all first-year residents who are interested in learning more about social justice. Residents will learn about power, privilege and oppression, and using social activism to create change. Students who choose to live on the Exploring Social Justice floor may share common interests including fair trade, poverty, education, or the environment. The Exploring Social Justice community is in Blackstone Hall.

Leading the Way

Leading the Way is open to all first-year residents who are interested in learning more about leadership development. Residents of the Leading the Way community will explore their leadership style through active reflection of their own participation in campus organizations and be challenged to develop their leadership skills as well as find their passion. Students are also encouraged to participate in service learning opportunities.  The Leading the Way community is in Nollen Hall.

Living Well

The Living Well floor is open to all first-year residents who are interested in holistic wellness focused on the mind, body, and spirit. Residents of the Living Well floor will be challenged to make healthy life choices that will support their success as students and contribute to the health and wellness of our campus. Students who choose to live on the Living Well floor may share common interests such as nutrition, fitness, meditation, relaxation, yoga, sports, and other activities and hobbies that promote balance and a healthy lifestyle.  The Living Well community is in Harlan Hall.

First Year Success Series

The First Year Success Series (FYSS) is a workshop series focused on helping our first year students successfully transition to Lake Forest College. Tackling some of the “big” issues related to adjustment and success, we aim to provide resources, skills, and opportunities related to helping new students find their fit during the fall semester. Past topics have included personal finance, understanding personalities, sexual health, and alcohol awareness.
