Logan Graham ’17
When she’s not researching abroad in Costa Rica, Logan spends a lot of her time in the Johnson Science Center. Her favorite place is the hologram gallery located on the physics floor. Holography was developed in the 1970s with the help of Lake Forest College Professor Emeritus TJ Jeong.
“I never get tired of looking at all the insanely awesome holograms,” Logan says. “They look so real!”
How did you choose your area of study?
In the sixth grade, I stumbled across a book titled The Brain That Changes Itself, by Dr. Normn Doidge. After reading the first chapter I was hooked (granted I probably didn’t understand half of what the author was saying at the time)! Neuroplasticity, the idea that our thoughts can change the structure and function of our brain into old age, excited me and left me craving more. I actively set out to discover as much as I could about the brain and nervous system and a few years later came across Lake Forest College’s neuroscience program.
At Lake Forest, there are endless opportunities to interact with students and faculty to discuss topics such as neuroplasticity, and connect them to current research and findings in the field. Little did I know that one book was all it would take to hook me in for life.
What did you think of the faculty?
The faculty are second to none. I feel comfortable approaching them for help with classwork, finding an internship, and even just general advice. A huge advantage of coming to Lake Forest is the close interaction you are able to have with your professors. Since class sizes are small, I’ve found that this style of learning works well for me as I can ask questions and have that one-on-one professor interaction you tend to only find at smaller schools.
What was your favorite class?
My favorite class has been NEUR362: Mechanisms of Brain Dysfunction. This course, taught by Professor DebBurman, stood out to me from all my other classes. It was based on a lot of group work, with small teams of students working together to write original grant proposals, along with numerous presentations on a diverse range of topics and in-depth literature reviews and discussions about neuroscience primary articles. We also served as peer mentors for BIO130: Bio Inq. Deadly Shape Hostage Brain as part of the class requirement, mentoring these students to help them succeed with their own projects and presentations.
What’s the best thing about Lake Forest College?
Our proximity to Chicago is a huge bonus and a great asset to students. Starting the first week of school, students are able to go downtown with their classmates as a part of Chicago Day to explore and become familiar with the city, enabling them to venture back on their own.
