Off-Campus Study

ISEP at Yasar University

After the events that have transpired in the last few months in Turkey, ISEP has decided to suspend programs in Turkey for the 2018-19 academic year.  They will reevaluate the program suspension in the coming months in preparation for the February 2018 application deadline for the 2018-19 academic year.

Explore Turkey, the Cultural Crossroads of Eastern and Western Civilization

Inhabited since Neolithic times and fought over for millennia due to its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, the area that is now modern Turkey was founded in 1923 shortly after the fall of the once powerful Ottoman Empire. An intoxicating mix of ancient and new, east and west, it’s not uncommon to find yourself sipping tea and haggling for spices in the morning before resting up for an evening of clubs and cocktails with new found friends. Turks are justifiably proud of their past but even more excited for their future as they work towards full membership in the European Union, an ever-expanding role in regional politics and continued economic growth.

Yasar University, an English medium, Foundation University, is located in the center of the city of Izmir on the scenic west coast of Turkey. The university offers over 60 degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Students are given every opportunity to make the most of their university years; a professional education in a supportive learning environment. The University’s links with the business sector and global universities make the campus an ideal environment for personal development and learning with an international dimension.

This program is best for a student that is independent.  A student must be comfortable with advocating for themselves on campus to thrive in this location. Please be aware that there may not be the same access to internet or amenities to which you may be accustomed.  Student services and especially class registration may not be at all similar to what is done at the College, and may be difficult for some students to adjust.

Location

Izmir, known as the “Pearl of the Aegean,” lies on the west coast of Turkey, right in the heart of Turkish-Aegean culture. Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey and its port is second only to Istanbul. The city is known as one of Turkey’s major commercial and trading hubs and is also renowned for its spectacular culture and climate. The Aegean region is home to many picture-perfect beaches, thermal hot springs, medieval castles and recreational activities such as scuba diving and wind surfing. Izmir also has numerous historical and archaeological sites which showcase the enduring culture of the region; including an ancient Agora and Kadifekale Castle. Nearby are the spectacular ruins of ancient Ephesus which contain the remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the original Seven Wonders of the World.

Academics

Yasar University, an English medium, Foundation University, is located in the center of the city of Izmir on the scenic west coast of Turkey. The university offers over 60-degree programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Students are given every opportunity to make the most of their university years; a professional education in a supportive learning environment. The University’s links with the business sector and global universities make the campus an ideal environment for personal development and learning with an international dimension.

Yasar University is a prominent institution of higher education that is deeply attached to Izmir, one of the most beautiful cities in Turkey’s Aegean region. Known for its international perspective, its welcoming and supportive student-centered campus, the University provides a quality education that is relevant to the skills needed by today’s employers. Yasar was also the first University in Turkey to gain CEA American accreditation.

Most classes at universities in Turkey combine larger weekly lectures with smaller follow-up discussion sessions and meet for two to three hours on average per week.  Similar to the U.S. academic system, class attendance and participation are an important factor in student grades.  Periodic tests, quizzes, and class assignments are also quite common.

Popular programs include International Relations, Business Administration, Tourism Management, Engineering, English Language and Literature, Music, Mathematics

Academic Environment and Teaching Style

Please understand that the academic system is quite different. Classes are usually lecture-based, instead of discussion or group work. Classes are often much larger than those found at Lake Forest College. Grades are based heavily, at times almost entirely, on one end-of-term exam, though some courses will also offer a midterm.  Professors are often more formal than those in the United States.

All courses/modules may have prerequisites.  Some departments may have limitations on numbers of courses that can be taken within or outside it.  Be aware of these limitations.
