Doug Plagens

Here's the story

When Doug started at Lake Forest College, he joined the radio station WMXM 88.9 FM and became a campus DJ. The longtime hockey player with an interest in talk radio soon parlayed this opportunity into a seat in the broadcast booth. He called hockey games with Brien Rea, Class of 2005, and learned on the job — forging relationships with players, setting up his own equipment, and honing his on-air personality. “You get better by doing it,” says Doug, who believes that he wouldn’t have had this kind of opportunity at a larger school. “I was able to get my feet wet and develop my style.”

“The Lake Forest education prepared me for graduate studies,” says Doug, who was a communication major. “Some people were overwhelmed by the work load, but I thought I had less work to do in graduate school than I did at Lake Forest.”
