Business execs share professional insight

Discover Financial Services business executives visited campus during this year’s Behavioral Economics and Finance Senior Seminar and shared their professional insight with students.

Senior Vice President for Deposit Products Tod Gordon and Director of Treasury Investments Jim Curtin engaged students in a discussion about CD pricing with regard to consumer decision making during their presentation, “Business Implications of Consumer Decisions.”

The Discover executives explored how price setting weighs:

  • social concerns regarding the effect of life-changing circumstances on individual liquidity constraints and
  • potential arbitrage.

During the presentation, students applied their behavioral economic theories and quantitative analysis skills to help outline the solution to this real business decision.

“Students enjoyed speaking to industry professionals and seeing the strong correlation between what they learn in class and what people do in the industry,” said Associate Professor of Economics and Business and Chair of Economics, Business and Finance Amanda Felkey.

Felkey arranged the visit with Director of the Quantitative Resource Center Julia Berkowitz. Discover Financial Services is headquartered near campus in Riverwoods, Illinois.
