Best value for philosophy degree

In a recent ranking, Lake Forest College was named one of the Best Value Small Colleges for a philosophy degree.

The Best Values team said: “With devoted faculty and a comprehensive core curriculum, Lake Forest College is one of the most affordable and stimulating top colleges for a philosophy degree.”

Rankings were based on academic breadth and depth, student support, and affordability using NCIS College Navigator database and program research.

Specifically, the College was recognized for offering philosophy coursework that spans from ancient Greek philosophy to modern analytical theory, for requiring students to build on that foundation and produce a senior thesis or independent research project, and for housing an Ethics Center devoted to studying social and politics issues around the globe.

“Of course, we’re very gratified to have received this recognition,” said Professor and Chair of Philosophy Janet McCracken. “We know we’re a terrific department, but it’s unusual for a small liberal arts college department to get recognized this way—and right alongside much bigger institutions. It’s all true: we have a small, but very passionate group of faculty that covers a whole lot of intellectual territory. We’ve been sending our students to some top grad and law schools.”
