Master of Liberal Studies

Sisters Find Enrichment Through MLS Program

Twin sisters, Shauna and Jordan Flesch, started in the MLS program in Fall of 2012.  Both were looking for a new challenge in their lives.  Shauna told us that after researching graduate programs for two years, she found the MLS program had courses in areas which would enhance her education. At the time of her application, Jordan felt at a crossroads in her life.  “To further my education means advancement, to stay would mean dull complacency.  The Master of Liberal Studies program will expand my thought process, and show me how to conceptualize new ideas and theories. There is no question to do great things in life, you must be enlightened.”

This month, both women will complete their requirements and receive a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies.  While they don’t see the MLS degree as the end of their education, both mentioned taking time off before enrolling in MBA programs. Shauna is focused on spending some time with her dogs, family, and friends before going back to school.  Jordan said she will wait a year before pursuing an MBA degree, and then perhaps a Ph.D.

As they completed their final papers this week, both took time to reflect back on their years in the program.  Shauna said, “I think the biggest thing I would like to share about the MLS program is how many different subjects I was exposed to and the vast knowledge I gained while being a part of it.  This degree is so unique … it offers so many different topics and subjects that you can specifically tailor your education, much like you would pick and choose your programs as an undergrad. I really loved the fact that one semester we could be focused on Legal and Ethical proponents and the following semester I was studying Literature from the Holocaust. The program is multi-faceted and because of its many different layers it can appeal to anyone, anywhere.”  Jordan acknowledged that the MLS classes required a lot of hard work.  “I think it’s very important to know you get what you put into this program.  It can work for you in the most extraordinary ways.   Over the last three years, I have discovered a lot about myself through this program.  To me, that makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Congratulations on your graduation from the MLS program, Shauna and Jordan!
