World Music Survey

Thanks to the wisdom and generosity of the Lake Forest College Music Department and the Center for Chicago Programs, World Music Survey is taking advantage of the plethora of talent in the Chicago area and hosting visits from local musicians who perform world music.

So far the class has had visits from experts in Hawaiian, Indian and Javanese gamelan musics. Later guests will demonstrate African percussion, Latin percussion, Brazilian samba, American gospel and world-fusion jazz.
This is a video of our 10/28 class on Celtic music. Pat Broaders and Liz Knowles of the Irish trio, Open the Door for Three gave a lecture-demonstration on Irish dance music to our class. Pat is playing the uilleann pipes, a bellows-blown bagpipe softer than the mouth-blown Scottish bagpipes. Because the uilleann pipes play continuously Broaders must use embellishments and ornamentation to create rhythmic separation between notes. Knowles has mastered the practice of imitating uilleann pipe ornamentation on the fiddle, as she demonstrates.
