#EmbraceDiversity: Global Fest draws hundreds
An intercultural gala topped off a week of international-themed events and activities that included dance, music, food, and fashion.
The kickoff to Global Fest began Sunday, October 5, with a flag processional across campus and men’s and women’s soccer games, both of which ended in victories for the Foresters.
Globalpalooza, which took place that Friday, offered a chance for students from various cultural organizations to show off their double-dutch jump roping skills, paint participants’ hands with henna, and eat tasty raspados. Music performances by Diamana Diya and Friends, Angel and the Flojonz, and Funkadesi kept the mood festive for the more than 250 students, faculty, and staff who attended.
“Students from 73 countries and nearly every state make up the student body here, and it’s why Global Fest is such an important and well-attended fall event,” said Erin Hoffman, director of the Office of Intercultural Relations at the College, whose office organized the weeklong series.
Saturday night’s standing-room-only Intercultural Gala featured performances by Latinos Unidos Dance Group, Bollywood Dance Group, and Bosnian accordion musician Almedin Smajlovic ’18. Many students showed off their home country’s traditional attire in a multicultural fashion show.
“The gala is a new tradition that students are eager to see continue in the future,” explained Hoffman.
