Richter Scholar researches Bible

Catherine Simmons ’13 spent her summer studying the book of James in the Bible as part of the Richter Scholar Program. She learned exactly how to research right that works towards a larger goal.

Catherine Simmons ’13 spent her summer studying the book of James in the Bible as part of the Richter Scholar Program. Working one-on-one with Professor Ron Miller, Simmons researched commentaries on James’ theology for ten weeks. She assisted Prof. Miller with his developing book about what happened to the brother of Jesus.

Not necessarily a religious person herself, Simmons learned how to research and evaluate Bible passages to reveal something new. She says the most valuable thing she gained from the program was learning how to do real research that works towards a larger goal.

“This summer I learned how to manage a large amount of information and narrow that down to what was useful for the project,” Simmons said, “It taught me the resources that I need to do research in the future and prepared me for any other research-based job that I might do.”
