Alumna builds better futures in Seoul

Morgan Easter ’09, an international relations major, is creating an enriched learning environment for her students in Seoul, South Korea. She is a primary teacher at a hagwon, a private institution. “Watching my kindergarten students start without any knowledge of English and seeing them develop into confident English speakers has been thrilling and rewarding,” she writes.

Easter spends rigorous days teaching reading and listening comprehension, speaking, phonics, writing and grammar with short lessons in science, art and music. She is assisted by a Korean co-teacher who communicates with the student’s parents. All the kindergarten classes go on a weekly field trip which is a highlight for Easter. They have visited science and art museums, a hanok village (traditional village), the zoo, many theater productions and a dolphin show.

Afternoons, Easter teaches elementary classes. She prepares lesson plans, manages the class, creates tests, grades homework and writes monthly evaluations for each student. She also calls students once a month for phone teaching to evaluate their listening comprehension and speaking skills.
