Life Trustee

Mary Longbrake ‘35
 Park Ridge, Illinois
August 16, 2011

Lake Forest College Life Trustee Mary Longbrake ‘35 died on August 16th. She was 97.

A native of Marysville, Ohio, Longbrake graduated from the

College with honors in French and history. After a short time with Northern Trust, she joined the Naval Reserves and spent World War II serving with the Office of Procurement and Material.

Longbrake was awarded the Secretary of the Navy’s Commendation Ribbon for her outstanding service.

She returned to Northern Trust after the war and was later named one of the first female officers of the bank, garnering the title of second vice president. In 1973, she was appointed vice president, a position she held until retiring in 1979. She also served various organizations as a director, including the Kobe College Corporation, the Wilmette Chapter of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Irvin L. Young Foundation and the Eleanor Foundation.

Longbrake was elected a trustee of the College in 1969 and served in that capacity until 1978, when she was named a Life Trustee.

She served two terms as the president of the College’s Alumni Association and served as vice president of the Alumni Fund, vice president for development of the Alumni Board of Governors, and chairman of the Annual Alumni Fund.

In recognition of her service and outstanding professional and civic achievement, Longbrake received the Alumni Distinguished Service Citation in 1965 and an honorary doctor of laws degree from the College in 1970.

Noting her extraordinary fundraising efforts for the College, the Mary Longbrake Award was created to honor the reunion class with the highest percentage of donors to their class gift.
