1948
John Kirkland, of Fonanta, Wis., reports that the National Right to Work Legal Defense and Education Foundation recently paid tribute to the late Norma Lineberger ’47 (1926-2009), as “the exemplary American she personified through a giving spirit and a passion for the law.” Lineberger spent her lifetime defending hard-working Americans’ rights to prosper from their own labor and work free from compulsory unionism.

“On as a sub and away like a star,” reports John Marvin. Initially reg- istered as a convention attendee, Marvin stepped in at a moment’s notice to give the main talk at the Czechoslovakian Collectors Association Convention in Syracuse, N.Y., in June when the main speaker ended up in the hospital.
1959
Despite a strain incurred while lifting her suitcase during the trip, Careen Taylor toured Italy this summer. “Keepin’ on keepin’ on does that to one,” she says with her great attitude toward life and adventure.
1961
Picture 2: Linda Wood Wims, of University Heights, Ohio, wrote The Visit, a play in which Wims shares thoughts of her son David C. Wims and his cancer journey six years ago. It was included in a collection of 10 plays titled From Breast Cancer to Broadway that was read at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City’s Greenwich Village on June 17. Wims says, “The collection of plays sought to empower and educate a proactive stance about cancer and cancer survivors.”She is pictured with her husband Dr. Lu D. Wims.

Richard Ablin was honored to present the Weinstein lecture at the Annual Symposium of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center, in New York City on May 25. Richard’s lecture, “Prostate Cancer: In Search of The Holy Grail,” was part of the symposium’s overarching theme, “New Approaches in Cancer Screening.”
1964
Picture 3: It’s been 35 years since Michael James opened the now legendary Heartland Café, a wholesome foods eatery and community center in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood. Through his work with the café, Michael recently won an Illinois Stewardship Alliance Golden Beet Award for bringing local food to Illinois communities, and Heartland Café was named one of the five top outdoor Chicago dining spots by the Huffington Post.
Picture 4: After retiring from various careers, Margaret “Penny” Mohan, of Jackson, Wyo., is currently a licensed clinical social worker with her own psychotherapy practice. She lives in the “valley” with her three dogs, one horse, and two adult sons, their wives and four grandchildren are nearby. Mohan reports, “Life is good – it’s as simple as that.”
Leslie Shepard was featured on the front page of The Baltimore Sun on July 3 following her retirement from the Baltimore School for the Arts, where she worked for 32 years. According to the article, she “spearheaded a $30 million building and renovation campaign that in 2008 added 29,000 square feet of classroom and studio space” at the school, named one of the top five public arts schools in the United States by the Doris Duke and Surdna foundations.

Urban received the Neptune Award for the Arts, established in 1986 to honor important individuals in the arts community for their artistic or programmatic achievements and for their work on behalf of the arts community.

George Potts, Mitch Meyerson, Ron Kaplan, Neal Howe and their band, Redwood Landing, founded during their time as Foresters, performed for the
last time in the Chicago area in October. They wanted to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding of Amazing Grace Coffeehouse, because, says Potts, “It was a place that became our second home for a number of years and to mark our mutual 60th birthdays.”

Landmark Vineyards, owned by Mary Peterson Colhoun ‘75 and Mike Colhoun, was recently rec- ognized by BudgetTravel.com as one of the “9 Best Secret Hotels in the World.” The website wrote, “For people who harbor fantasies of running away and starting their own winery, Landmark has the answer: two guest rooms right in the middle of a working vineyard, where, from your front door, you can watch the grapes growing and being harvested.”

LeGrand S. Redfield Jr. was a guest speaker for the third con- secutive year at the June Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Harvard Emergency Medicine Residency Week Didactic Lecture Series on the topic of “Finances for Medical Residents.”

“I do wish all Foresters the very best,” writes Howard F. Molen of Mamaroneck, N.Y. Molen is celebrating 31 years of growth with HFM Builders, his full-service general contracting business that serves the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

Covington Shackleford moved to London and has taken a new position with Chubb Insurance as the vice president of compensation and benefits for Europe.

The Barbara L. Armour Memorial Award, which recognizes excel- lence, dedication, and contributions to science research, was presented to Michelle Montag Lowy, of Springfield, Ill. Lowy has been a researcher at Southern Illinois University’s pharmacology department since 2008. She and her husband, Barry Lowy, have two sons, Abraham and Joshua.
1984
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn appointed William Lowry as one of 12 members of the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Board in July.
On May 14, Wayne Rohde, of Arlington, Va., married Maria Luisa de la Cerda in Washington, D.C. Rohde is a member of the law firm of Cozen O’Connor and de la Cerda is a master sergeant in the United States Army.
1986
Picture 11: In National Public Radio’s 2011 summer reader’s poll, Jacqueline Carey’s historical fantasy series Kushiel’s Legacy was voted among the top 100 science fiction and fantasy works of all time. More than 60,000 readers cast votes for the top 100, which included works ranging from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings.

Picture 12: Kathryn Stitt Bass recently published The Mysteries, her third collection of poems. Dana Gioia, award-winning poet and former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, praised Bass’ work, saying, “The Mysteries is no ordinary collection of poems. In its quiet but revelatory world, everyday objects acquire a lyrical power.”
1991
Paul Grabowski joined the firm of Bracewell & Giuliani as chief marketing officer. Most recently, Grabowski served as senior direc- tor of business development and marketing for Hildebrandt Baker Robbins. Grabowski is a past fellow of the Houston Young Lawyers Foundation, a member of the LMA and its Southeast Chapter, and several local and national attorney associations.

“It’s a popcorn, fun thriller,” says director Hanelle Meier Culpepper about her made-for-TV feature Deadly Sibling Rivalry that pre- miered on the Lifetime Television network in August. Charisma Car- penter of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Kyle Richards of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills play the good/evil twins.

Picture 15: On September 18, retiring Senator Susan Simkins Garrett (Illinois State Senate District 29) received the Ab Mikva Political Courage Award, which recognizes courage and political leadership. Among her many accomplishments in 12 years as state legislator, Garrett sponsored a number of policies designed to provide more transparency and accountability in state government, leading to the creation of the Illinois Transparency and Accountability Portal (ITAP).
Picture 16: Jenny Severson welcomed Zoey Mae Johnson to her family on June 10. Severson lives with her husband, todd Johnson, and their children, lucy and Zoey, in plymouth, minn. She also reports that her nephew Taylor Jones ’15 started at lake Forest in the fall, and she’s excited to have another Forester in the family!

Picture 17: Mitchell King joined the law firm of Kretsch & Gust in Edina, Minn., on July 1. he and his wife, alison, were married in October 2009 in Minneapolis, and welcomed their first child, Levi Harold King, on November 15, 2010. The family recently sold their condo in downtown Minneapolis and is looking forward to moving into their new home with a big yard in Minnetonka just in time for trick-or-treating!

Helen Jugovic, of Wilmington, N.C., is proud to announce the opening of her new immigration law firm, The Law Offices of Helen Jugovic, in January. She has four employees, and three of them are bilingual. Also, she was appointed alternate responsible officer for Education Partners International, a J-1 Exchange Visitor Program for international teachers.
Picture 19: Josh Moulton recently opened a new art gallery in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. The gallery showcases original paintings of urban landscapes from around the country, including Chicago neighborhood scenes, architectural gems, and rural vistas.

Picture 23: Jared Konie married Kate Erin Lynn on April 8. After graduation, Konie taught English in Japan for two years before moving back to his hometown of Kansas City to complete medical school at the University of Kansas. He is currently a general surgery resident at the University of Missouri Hospital at Columbia, with plans to pursue a career in trauma critical care surgery.

Picture 24: Jennifer Beightley earned her master’s degree in nonprofit man- agement from DePaul University with distinction. She continues to devote her career to nonprofit organizations and is currently a senior development officer in major gifts at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Dave Beran, chef of the popular Chicago restaurant Next, was featured on the front page of The New York Times “Dining” section on August 17. The article, by renowned critic Sam Sifton, said, “A challenge and temptation to ambitious chefs across the country has arisen here on Chicago’s near west side, south of the train tracks on a block thick with idle meatpackers‘ trucks.”
Laura Harmon Manarik shares that she was recently featured in a Lake Forester article. Manarik, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age two, is waiting for a dou- ble-lung transplant, but remains upbeat and busy, recently starting her own blog: manarikmusings. blogspot.com.
2004
Michael J. Greene’s WorldPennyJar.com, a social- business model that allows people to make electronic micro-donations to help fund disaster-relief efforts and other non-disaster humanitarian efforts, is making headlines. The organization was recently featured in an August 15 Reuters article, “Young philanthropists go high-tech to reach lofty giving goals” and in the Wall Street Journal on August 22. Picture 26: Gregory Larnell and Twyla Blackmond Larnell ’06 are returning to Chicago after completing graduate studies at Michigan State University. Gregory recently completed his doctoral studies in mathematics education and Twyla is completing her doctorate in political science. In the fall semester, Gregory began a tenure-track professorship at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) while Twyla joined the faculty in the political science department at Loyola University Chicago. Also, after leaving Lake Forest, the couple welcomed a wonderful, ener- getic daughter, Zaria (age 4), who has already developed an incredible propensity to ask interesting and hard questions.

Adam Dick was on campus this summer filming scenes for an independent film, Nightlights, that he is co-producing about a woman who is the sole caretaker of her autistic twin brother.
Picture 28: Adam O’Neil and Lauren Stanton have been married for over a year and are expecting their first child in early Novem- ber. After spending four years in Boulder, Co., where O’Neil earned a master’s degree in sport and performance psychology from the University of Denver, the couple recently moved back to Los Angeles so that O’Neil can pursue a career at the Sports Concussion Institute.

Matthew Zorc has been living in and teaching English in Saitama, Japan, (about an hour north of Tokyo) for six years. This summer, he volunteered all of his spare and vacation time to help victims of the tsunami that devastated the fishing village of Ishinomaki, Japan, in March.

Lou Bertuca, a top aide to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn in planning and protocol, was recently named as Deputy Chief of Staff at the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. His job responsibilities include tollway intergovernmental affairs and special projects related to day-to-day tollway management.
After earning his master of arts in public relations and advertising at DePaul University last summer, Jordan Lange landed his “dream job” with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in New York City.
Kevin Conway Smith was a key- note speaker for the 2011 Habitat for Humanity National Youth Lead- ership Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.
2008
Fresh from her master’s program in music education, Erin Alderson will be teaching for a year at Mon- mouth College in Illinois, where she will direct the marching band and the concert band, and teach woodwind technique for music education majors, as well as give individual music lessons.
Picture 31: Nicholas Primrose met Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in the attorney’s lounge of the United States Supreme Court this summer. Primrose is studying at Barry University School of Law.
Sonny Sharp is a media sales executive for the Pioneer Press division of the Sun Times Media Group.
2009
Picture 32: Charlie Alves has been working as an LED technician and handheld camera operator on Michael Buble’s Crazy Love tour. He traveled through western Canada, the western U.S., and Mexico. His job consisted of building massive LED video screens, as well as a live HD-video system. The photo was taken in Mexico City at the last concert of the tour at Auditorio Nacional.
