Spanish prof’s film debuts at Chicago Latino Film Festival
Assistant Professor of Spanish Gizella Meneses’ first film entitled Second Generation Stories: Growing Up Latino in Chicago debuted recently at the Chicago Latino Film Festival.
In this documentary, college professor and first-time filmmaker Gizella Meneses examines the second-generation Chicago Latino/a experience and grapples with the complex phenomenon of belonging to two worlds and to none. With barrios across Chicagoland as a backdrop, and drawing from her own experience as a Latina, Meneses conducts interviews with Latinos/as ranging in age, education, profession and national origin. In doing so, complex issues surrounding self-identity, language and culture are presented.
Says Meneses about her work, “It’s sort of a personal look at how we have been labeled and the sort of terminology we use and how we use it.”
