Linnea Zrioka ’13 thanks donors for giving her the opportunity to explore the diversity of Chicago

A recipient of the Philip Schuyler Glidden ’83 Annual Scholarship shares her love of different cultures and dreams of studying abroad. Her involvement on campus reflects this passion and her commitment to exploring all Lake Forest College has to offer.

I am from North Yarmouth, Maine. This year, I am a recipient of the Philip Schuyler Glidden ’83 Annual Scholarship. I am currently a sophomore at Lake Forest College majoring in Communications, and also I plan to minor in art. I come from a small high school, where I played volleyball and basketball, but also developed a liking for art, specifically photography and ceramics. My mother is from Sweden, which has given me opportunities to travel since I was a young child. Through these travels I have developed an interest in learning and experiencing foreign cultures.

In Linnea’s words:

This scholarship has been a large contributor in allowing me to gain an education from Lake Forest College. It is truly appreciated.

I chose to go to Lake Forest College for many reasons: coming from a small high school, I believe that I gain more from small class sizes and being able to develop a student relationship with my professors. I was also impressed with the cultural diversity at this small college: I like learning about new cultures, and I have met many people from all over the word during my time here. The city of Chicago also intrigued me; coming from a small town I did not have the advantage of a large, diverse city. The accessibility to the city offers many things that I enjoy, such as music and art. I also personally enjoy architecture, and Chicago has been a great city to experience.

At the College, I am involved in the Student Ambassador program, I am the treasurer of Art Club, and this year I have also joined CircleK (a community service club) and Umoja, a club that celebrates and demonstrates the different cultures from Africa which many of my friends at the college come from.

I hope to continually get involved on campus and also learn more about the city (go to more museums, art galleries, etc). I also hope to study abroad during my junior or senior year. I have already enjoyed many experiences in the city, and I feel I have gained from the small class sizes; I’ve felt challenged at times, but there has always been the opportunity to meet with my professors.

This scholarship has been a large contributor in allowing me to gain an education from Lake Forest College. It is truly appreciated.
