In this lecture, Professor Roberts will treat us to a talk about the early medieval art that inspired Tolkien’s stories, including manuscript illustrations from the Lindisfarne gospels and the Book of Kells, Celtic objects, and Sutton Hoo artifactsShe will explore Tolkien’s own visual illustrations, such as the famous door to Moria. And she will conclude with a discussion of Peter Jackson’s filmic re-interpretation of Tolkien’s art and the medieval art work that inspired it.
