Neuroscience Seminar Series: Estrogen actions in the brain and epilepsy
Dr. Catherine Woolley will deliver a public lecture in neuroscience on the topic “Hormones and Brain Plasticity.” She is the William Deering Chair in Biological Sciences in the Department of Neurobiology at Northwestern University. This event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Wooley received her Bachelor of Science in zoology with honors from Texas A&M University and her PhD from Rockefeller University. From there, she worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Washington’s department of neurological surgery and subsequently joined the faculty of Northwestern University. In 2001, she founded and became director of the Northwestern University Biological Imaging Facility, which, since then, has grown substantially, both in its size and number of users. Dr. Woolley is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the American Epilepsy Society, the Society for Behavioral Neuroendrocrinology, among others. She has received numerous honors and awards, including the Pioneer Award from the Northwestern University Women’s Health Institute, and the C.J. Herrick Award from the American Association of Anatomists
Dr. Woolley’s research focuses on two area of neurobiology. First, she is studying estrogen as a neurosteroid and its influence on synaptic function and behavior. Second, she is interested in synaptic mechanisms differences that lead to different experiences between males and females. Her lab utilizes molecular biology, biochemistry, light and electron microscopy, electrophysiology, and behavioral assays to better understand synaptic function and its effects on behavior.
