Literary Festival: Reading by Elizabeth Gentry and Kate Bernheimer

Elizabeth Gentry: Elizabeth is the fourth Madeline P. Plonsker Emerging Writer in Residence here at Lake Forest College. Her manuscript Housebound was chosen by judge Kate Bernheimer as the winner of the 2012 competition. She is set to receive $10,000 and was awarded two months in residence at Glen Rowan House on the Lake Forest College campus. Her book will, upon approval, be published by &NOW Books / Lake Forest College Press and distributed by Northwestern University Press. She lives in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Kate Bernheimer: Kate Bernheimer’s most recent book, Horse, Flower, Bird (Coffee House Press), is “a collection readers won’t soon forget, one that redefines the fairy tale into something wholly original” (Booklist). Her renowned trio of novels—The Complete Tales of Ketzia Gold, The Complete Tales of Merry Gold, and  The Complete Tales of Lucy Gold (all with FC2)—work together to explore themes of sadness, anger, and bliss. Her first children’s book, The Girl in The Castle inside The Museum (Random House/Schwartz & Wade Books), illustrated by Nicoletta Ceccoli, was named one of the Best Books of 2008 by Publishers Weekly. She has appeared in such journals as Tin House, Western Humanities Review, Poetry International, and more. She also has edited an array of fairy tale anthologies. Forthcoming children’s books include The Lonely Book, and The Girl Who Wouldn’t Brush Her Hair (both Random House/Schwartz & Wade Books). In 2005, she founded, and currently remains editor of, Fairy Tale Review, the leading literary journal dedicated to fairy tales as a contemporary art form.
