Mission of the John and Christine Gates Center for Leadership and Personal Growth

Thanks to a generous gift from John S. and Christine Gates and their family, the Gates Center for Leadership and Personal Growth was established to:

(1) advance the understanding, development and practice of leadership by Lake Forest College students, and

(2) help students experience “the personal growth that accompanies the quest for excellence” in all aspects of life, academic and otherwise, as affirmed in the College’s Mission Statement.

Throughout the year, the Center sponsors a range of innovative programs in support of this mission, including the following representative examples:

Leadership

  • Leadership Scholars Program
  • Leadership Speaker Series
  • Leadership Library
  • CROYA Peer Mentors Program

Personal Growth

  • Alumni Panels on Careers, Conflict Resolution, Family Life, Home-Work Balance, and Related Issues
  • Expert Speakers on Emotional Intelligence:  the Importance of “EQ” as well as “IQ”
  • “Feed Your Mind” Faculty Lectures on the Transition from High School to College, Cross-Cultural Differences, Extrovert-Introvert Tensions, and Related Issues
  • Ongoing Community Service Programming, including weekly community service opportunities and the annual all-campus Gates Center Day of Service

The Center also seeks to communicate and collaborate with leadership centers and personal growth programs on other leading college campuses, for the benefit of students nationwide.
