Counseling Services > Psychology Externship
The Training Program
The externship at Lake Forest College Counseling Services is a 9-month training program beginning in mid-August and ending in mid-May. A typical schedule consists of two 8-hour days and one 4-hour day. Wednesdays are a required training day for all students. Externs receive all college holidays, time off during the winter break, sick leave and additional time off as needed. Two unfunded externship positions are available.
We encourage applications from students who have completed two years of graduate school coursework in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. While applications from therapy externship students will be considered, applicants who are seeking advanced therapy externships are preferred.
Philosophy of Training
The purpose of the externship is to provide a supervised experience that focuses on developing strong clinical and professional skills. Externs will gain a broad exposure to the variety of professional activities and service delivery systems which exist in a contemporary service-oriented college counseling setting. Counseling Services is committed to the achievement of excellence in the training experience through intensive supervision by licensed clinical psychologists and a variety of training seminars.
Training Experiences
It is the philosophy of the training program that psychologists should thoroughly understand and have expertise in the provision of services involving emotional, psychological, and behavioral disability and discomfort related to personal, social, and academic dysfunction. To facilitate and encourage this development, training experiences may include the following:7) Complete Psychological Assessments (minor emphasis)
We wish you well during your externship search process. We hope that you will give Lake Forest College Counseling Services your consideration as you work to identify training sites for your externship.
