    The Class of 2012 theses are on display in the reference area of the library. They will be there until Monday, May 14.

    Congratulations to Amanda Muledy who won the All College Writing Contest. Congratulations to Elizabeth Bulley and Nikolai Leffner who won the First Year Writing Contest.

    Tricia is President and Executive Producer of Travel Film Productions, LLC, a women-owned and WBENC certified production company based in Chicago. Tricia and her business partner, Colleen Kelly, created a television series based on family travel. The show will feature ten U.S. cities and three international destinations.

    We will be performing server maintenance tomorrow morning (Wednesday) at our normal maintenance window between 5am and 7am.  Many services on campus will be unavailable during this time including Moodle and my.lakeforest.  Access to email WILL be available, however.

    April 22-28 is National Preservation week. You’ve made a lot of Word documents, images, and other files. Make sure they’re around and usable for years to come.

    All bicycles on campus that are not registered at Public Safety AND do not have a LFC license plate by midnight on Monday May 14th will be removed from bike racks and elsewhere on campus on May 15th and 16th, 2012.   Questions or concerns can be directed to Adam at Fac Man, x5043

    Next week on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, Lake Forest College will be holding the 3rd Annual Ry’s Run 5K Race*.  As you know, this event is held in memory of Ry McCarthy, who was a goalie on the women’s hockey team, and lost her courageous battle with cancer on July 28, 2009. The 5k course layout has been redesigned to have minimal impact on our neighbors but will require some parking space closures for the safety of the participants.

    The All-College Writing Contest is now in the spring semester.  Because seniors are eligible for this prize, the deadline needs to be before the end of the semester.  Please consider your best writers, especially those in your junior and senior seminars, and encourage them to submit their work.  Take a moment to think back to the stellar work from last semester as well.

    This is a reminder that the Writing Center is not open over reading days and finals. This is so that the tutors can concentrate on their end-of-semester writing projects.

    Faculty, staff, students and alumni are invited to participate in Ry’s Run on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 in front of Halas Hall at 4:30 p.m. Ry’s Run is a 5K race on the residential streets of Lake Forest. The course begins in front of Halas Hall and finishes on Farwell Field. Participants include faculty, staff and students of Lake Forest College.

    The Sports and Recreation Center will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 8.

    44 Plays for 44 Presidents, directed by our new faculty member Chloe Johnston, opens on Thursday!  This is a play that Chloe co-wrote ten years ago and performed at the Neo Futurists in Chicago, and now Lake Forest is doing the inaugural production in a national festival!

    Nominations for the Phi Beta Kappa Senior Thesis Award are due by Monday, 4/23 at 5:00p. Please note that this award is open to all students including those elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

    The last talk in the 2012 Faculty Luncheon Discussion Group series for the spring semester will be at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 in the Faculty Lounge, Commons.  Our speaker will be Professor of Physics, Scott Schappe. The title of his talk is: Musical sound: why instruments sound the way they do.

    We’ll be upgrading LiveWhale to version 1.4.3, and you’ll want to learn about some of the new features: adding links, photos, and files will change and, hopefully, be more intuitive; there’s a new Facebook widget; events can how have categories, and many more!

    The Environmental Studies Program will be burning along the edge of the ravine behind Johnson/Carnegie/Hotchkiss on Sunday afternoon, weather permitting.  We expect to light it up around 12:30 and have it out by 4:30.  The burns are necessary to stimulate the growth of native plants and to help knock back some of the invasive species that are not adapted to burns.  Please contact Jeff Sundberg if you have any questions.  Feel free to attend if you are interested.

    Come out and support the Lake Forest College Softball team as they host the Midwest Conference Classic from Saturday, April 14-Sunday, April 15 at the Waukegan Sports Park in Waukegan, IL. Check out goforesters.com for the complete game schedule.

    We are heading into that period in the semester when students will be encountering a full schedule if they  try to book an appointment within a 48 hours of a writing deadline. (We are running a full schedule through Sunday at the moment)

    Full-time faculty members may apply for a summer research grant to help defray the costs of conducting research during the summer. Eligible expenses include travel to research sites, library or laboratory fees, research supplies or equipment (when other sources of funding cannot be identified), secretarial support, and manuscript preparation. Expenses will be paid by reimbursement from the Dean of the Faculty’s office.

    A decorative plant has been sent on behalf of the College to the Schutts. As soon as we know where the Schutts would like memorial gifts to be sent, we’ll get the word out. We anticipate a large crowd at the Presbyterian Church.  Doors will open at 3:30 p.m.; the memorial begins at 4:15 p.m.  Offices may choose to close early to allow employees to attend the service.

    It is with great sadness and grief that Liz Libby, Associate Vice President and Director of Communications and Marketing, sent out an email telling the college community that President Steve Schutt’s 18 year old son Edward, a high school senior, was hit and killed by a train late last night.  The Lake Forest Police Department is investigating. Details about funeral arrangements are forthcoming.

    Please join us on Wednesday, March 28 at 4:00 p.m in the Deerpath Gallery in the Deerpath Residence Hall for the opening of a new exhibition. Durand Art Scholar Barbara Wye has curated an exhibition on the Occupy Movement. Hope you will come to support this student’s artistic efforts as well as view a visual response to a political movement that is sweeping our nation. Refreshments will be served.

    A memorial service for Edward Schutt is planned for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 27 at 4:15 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, at the corner of Deerpath and Sheridan roads. A reception will follow at the Glen Rowan House from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. We encourage you to park on Middle Campus and walk from there to the Church and Glen Rowan; Glen Rowan parking spots will be taken by Steve and Lori’s family and trustees.
