September 19, 2009 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Lake Forest Falls to Visiting Cornell, Prevails at Wisconsin Lutheran
After dropping all three doubles matches to Cornell, three Foresters came out on top in singles. Freshman Melika Celebic (Visoko, Bosnia Herzegovina/United World College) lost the first set 6-4 before winning set two 6-2 and the third-set tiebreak 10-4. With both teams traveling elsewhere for afternoon contests, the final two singles matches were shortened. Lake Forest junior Lauren Stroner (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) posted an 8-6 victory at #5 and classmate Natalie Atroshenko (Wheeling, Ill./Buffalo Grove) triumphed 8-2 at #6. The Foresters rebounded to take all three doubles matches at Wisconsin Lutheran. Celebic and sophomore Nonie Carson (Littleton, Colo./Littleton) won 8-1 at #1, Lauren Stroner and twin sister Michelle Stroner (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) prevailed 8-2 at #2, and freshman Katelin McRaith (Savage, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) won 8-4 with senior Viri Del Bosque (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) at #3. It was the first time since they came to Lake Forest that the Stroner sisters had appeared together in the doubles lineup. Sophomores Allison Hamel (Bend, Ore./Bend) and Sara Bennett (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) did not lose a game in their victories at #3 and #6 singles, respectively. Celebic won 6-0, 6-2 at #1 and senior Molly Stapleton (St. Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) triumphed 6-2, 6-1 at #2. Michelle Stroner recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #4 and Atroshenko prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at #5. The Foresters will play at Beloit College Wednesday (September 23) at 4:00 p.m. before beginning Midwest Conference South Division play against host Grinnell College (9:30 a.m.) and Illinois College (12:30 p.m.) next Saturday (September 26).
