October 22, 2009 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Melika Celebic Named Forester Athlete of the Week
Celebic, a freshman and the fourth seed in Sunday’s #1 singles tournament, did not lose a game in her quarterfinal victory over the top player from Grinnell College. She then eliminated the defending champion from Lawrence University in the semifinals 6-2, 6-4. Finally, in the final match, she edged out St. Norbert College’s best player 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to claim the title. Celebic is the first Forester to capture a conference championship at #1 singles since Kris Ang accomplished the feat in 1989. In Friday’s MWC Team Championship Tournament, Celebic split a pair of doubles and singles matches. She then reached the semifinals in Saturday’s #1 doubles tournament. Celebic finished the season with a 16-4 singles record and 14-7 mark in doubles. Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays.
