August 14, 2009 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Chris Kane Joins Forester Women's Tennis Staff as Associate Head Coach
Kane is the Forester men's tennis program's all-time winningest coach with a 77-59 career record in seven seasons. His squad matched the school record with 17 victories in 2007, finished as the runner-up at the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament the following season, and is 42-18 overall and 18-7 against MWC opponents over the last three years. Kane was the head women's tennis coach at Dominican University from 1981-83. Despite the squad having never won a match prior to his arrival, the team tied for the state NAIA Championship and one member qualified for the NAIA National Championship Tournament in 1983. In addition to his success in coaching, Kane excelled as a player, competing at the top spot in the lineup at the University of Notre Dame. He is also the holder of three U.S. Tennis Championships and 15 state titles. Kane will be replacing Pier after the 2009 season, her 14th with the program and fifth as head coach. The Foresters are 108-81-2 overall and 29-8 in MWC South Division play since she joined the staff in 1996. Lake Forest finished among the top three at the MWC Tournament eight consecutive seasons and captured titles in 1999 and 2003. She will retain her role as Senior Administrative Assistant in the Athletic Department and continue to be a resource for the tennis players as well as all the other athletes at the College. “I’ve enjoyed my time with the tennis program and will continue to give my support to the team and players in any way I can. I’m excited that Coach Kane is joining the women’s staff and believe he’ll take the team to new heights.” "Coach Kane has obviously done well with our men's program," noted Slaats. "Now he'll be making an even greater commitment to Forester tennis and I am excited about the potential synergy between the two programs. I also want to recognize and thank Chris Pier for her many contributions to our women's tennis program. She has always been extremely dedcicated to the players she's coached and to making Forester women's tennis successful." "I'm grateful for the opportunity to become even more involved with the game I love here at the College," began Kane. "I'm looking forward to getting to know the players on the women's team and to helping members of both programs pursue their goals on and off the tennis court."
