Lake Forest Evens Record With Victory Over Grinnell
Liebl records second straight double-double

Devon Liebl recorded her second straight double-double.

Forester sophomore forward Ashley Matthias (Barneveld, WI/Mount Horeb) led all scorers and set a new career-high with 19 points. She also added seven rebounds. Junior guard Devon Liebl (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) matched one career-high with 17 points and established another with 13 rebounds in her second straight double-double. She also added five assists, three steals, and a blocked shot. Senior guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) also reached double figures with 14 points and led the squad with six assists. Senior guard/forward Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) scored eight points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.

Lake Forest shot 38.8% from the field, 38.1% (8-of-21) from three-point range, and 73.9% (17-of-23) from the free throw line. The Pioneers made just 32.4% of their field goal attempts and only 10 of 40 shots from beyond the arc. Grinnell went to the foul line 14 times and made eight. The Foresters out-rebounded their guests 52-42 and committed 21 turnovers, one fewer than their guests.

Grinnell scored the game’s first four points and led 14-4 after nearly seven minutes of play. A 13-3 Lake Forest run tied the score at 17 with nine minutes to play in the half and the score was tied again at 28 and 30 before a three-pointer by Liebl gave the home team a three-point halftime advantage, its first lead of the game.

After the Pioneers went ahead by a point twice in the first few minutes of the second half, the Foresters pulled away with a 9-0 run. The lead was trimmed to three points twice and was 53-49 with nine minutes to play. Lake Forest outscored its guests 12-0 over the next minute-and-a-half. The Pioneers responded with a 10-0 run to make the score 65-59 with 3:55 left but would get no closer. A 12-1 Forester run sealed the victory for the home team.

Lake Forest will be on the road next weekend (January 14-15). The Foresters will travel to St. Norbert College on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. game and will take on Carroll College at 2:00 Saturday afternoon.
