Foresters Remain in MWC Tourney Hunt with Win at Knox
Freeman knocks down five three-pointers

Kristy Freeman scored 15 of her 21 points on three-pointers.
GALESBURG, IL - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team completed a series sweep of Knox College with a 75-57 victory on the road Wednesday (February 9) night. The Foresters raised their overall record to 11-9 and their Midwest Conference mark to 8-5. The team is now a half-game behind fourth-place Illinois College in the league standings. The top four teams qualify for the annual MWC Championship Tournament February 25-26. Knox fell to 2-19 overall and 0-14 in the conference.

Senior guard Kristy Freeman (Palatine, IL/Palatine) led all players with 21 points and added three assists. She shot 7-for-11 from the field, including a 5-for-6 performance from three-point range. It was the fifth time this season she made at least five three-pointers in a game. Junior guard Devon Liebl (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) was next on the squad with 17 points. She also shot 7-for-11 from the field and chipped in six rebounds, four assists, a blocked shot, and a steal. Freshman forward/center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) scored a dozen points and also pulled down six boards. Sophomore guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) scored seven points, had a block and a steal, and led the team with six assists.

The Foresters’ .563 field goal percentage was their second-highest mark of the year. The visitors also connected on over half (8 of 15) of their three-point tries and 76.5% (13 of 17) of their free throw attempts. Knox shot just 30.9% from the floor, 3-of-27 from beyond the arc, and 12-of-18 from the foul line. The Prairie Fire out-rebounded Lake Forest 41-39 but committed two more turnovers (21-19).

Liebl scored the game’s first basket and Lake Forest led the rest of the way. The margin grew to as many as 14 points (33-19) in the first half and the score was 38-28 at intermission.

The Foresters increased their lead to 20 points (52-32) with 13 minutes to play. A 9-0 Prairie Fire run cut the difference to nine points (56-47) with seven minutes left but the home team would get no closer. A 12-2 Lake Forest run over the next three-and-a-half minutes put the game out of reach.

The Foresters will host Monmouth College Saturday (February 12) afternoon at 1:00. A spot in the four-team MWC Championship Tournament will likely be at stake next Wednesday (February 16) when the team hosts Illinois College at 5:30 p.m. Lake Forest will close out the regular season on Saturday, February 19, at Grinnell College.
