KENOSHA, WI - The Lake Forest College women’s basketball team edged out host Carthage College 58-57 Tuesday (December 6) night. The Foresters raised their record on the year to 5-3 while the Lady Reds fell to 2-4.

Sophomore center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) led the visitors with 10 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Devon Liebl (Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) and junior guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) each added eight points. Bauer chipped in with six rebounds and Liebl led the squad with three assists.

The Foresters shot just 33.9% from the field, which was only slightly less than Carthage’s 35.7%. Lake Forest made five of 13 three-point attempts but connected on just 13 of 27 free throws. The Lady Reds had a dozen attempts from beyond the arc but made just one. They were 26-of-36 from the foul line. The home team owned a slight edge in rebounds (40-38) but committed six more turnovers (29) than their guests (23).

Carthage scored the game’s first four points and led 9-4 before a 22-5 Lake Forest run gave the visitors a 26-14 lead with seven minutes left in the opening period. The Foresters led 36-25 at halftime.

A 9-0 Lady Red run to open the second half cut the margin to just two points and a 10-0 run later in the period gave the home team a 46-41 lead. The difference was seven points with four minutes remaining before a basket by Baich, a three-pointer by Liebl, and a jumper by Bauer tied the score at 54 with two-and-a-half minutes left. Two free throws regained the lead for Carthage on the next possession and two by freshman forward Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein), who made her first career start, tied the game again with slightly more than a minute to play. Two more free throws by Bauer gave the Foresters the lead with 12 seconds left and a 1-for-2 trip to the foul line for the Lady Reds in the final five seconds gave the visitors a one-point victory.

It was the final game of the fall semester for Lake Forest. The team will resume its 2005-06 schedule on Thursday, January 5, at home against Trinity International University.
