The Numbers are In: Saturday's Playing for a Cure was a Success
The Foresters and their opponents raised more than $1,500

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College Athletic Department hosted the first of two "Playing for a Cure" days on Saturday (October 24) and raised funds in the fight against cancer.

The Forester men's and women's soccer teams hosted Midwest Conference rival Grinnell College at 10:00 a.m. On each field one team wore white uniform shirts with pink numbers and the other donned pink shirts with white numerals to show their support. In the Sports Center the Forester volleyball team, dressed in pink uniforms, hosted Grinnell College at 11:00 a.m.. and Trinity International University at 3:00 in the afternoon. Lake Forest's football team also got in on the action with pink socks for their game against Monmouth College.

Raffle tickets and pink "Playing for a Cure" t-shirts were sold throughout the day and, along with generous donations from several fans, sent the fundraising total over the $1,500 mark. Money collected will not only support the American Cancer Society, but will also help the College fund the new Ry McCarthy Award, which will be presented annually to the member of the women’s hockey team that best displays spirit, determination, dedication, and love for the game – the special qualities of the player for whom the award was named. Ry, a member of the women's hockey team, lost her battle with Ewing's Sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer, in July after being diagnosed in the fall of 2008.

Lake Forest will host a similar event on February 20, 2010. The Forester basketball teams will host Illinois College and the hockey teams will face visiting Concordia University Wisconsin. The first Ry McCarthy Award will be presented during the women's hockey game.
