Foresters Come From Behind to Win 5-2 at Concordia Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Lake Forest College men’s soccer team fell behind by two goals to host Concordia University Chicago on Sunday (September 2) but came back to win its season opener 5-2. The Foresters are now 3-0-0 against the Cougars in their history.

After the home team scored goals at 2:29 and 19:32 in the first half, Lake Forest finally got on the scoreboard in the 35th minute when senior Attila Schmidt (Akron, Ohio/Western Reserve) assisted junior Steve Stavropoulos (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson). Schmidt then tied the game 90 seconds later on an assist from sophomore Wei Wang (Shanghai, China/Shanghai XinZhong). The game was tied at two goals apiece at intermission.

Stavropoulos scored again in the 57th and 77th minutes to give the visitors a two-goal lead. His second goal of the game was assisted by junior Andi Keca (Bloomingdale, Ill./Addison Trail) and the third was unassisted. Sophomore David Jo (Seoul, Korea/Stevenson) converted a penalty kick opportunity with 10:54 to play in the contest to close out the scoring.

Junior Sam Malmberg (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) held the Cougars scoreless for the final 70 minutes of the game and recorded a pair of saves to earn the victory.

The Foresters will travel to Benedictine University Wednesday (September 5) night for a 7:00 contest under the lights. The team will begin Midwest Conference play Saturday (September 8) afternoon at 3:00 at Ripon College.
