Foresters Split Pair of Conference Games Over the Weekend
Team routs Knox, falls to Ripon in overtime

RIPON, WI - The Lake Forest College men’s soccer team began Midwest Conference play by splitting a pair of league games over the weekend (September 10-11). The Foresters hosted and defeated Knox College 9-0 on Saturday and fell 3-2 in overtime at Ripon College on Sunday. Lake Forest is now 2-1-0 overall on the season and 1-1-0 in the MWC. Knox fell to 2-2-0 and Ripon raised its mark to 1-1-0.

Junior Jordan Lange (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North) started Saturday’s scoring barrage just 7:36 into the contest off a corner kick from senior Alex Lofgren (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South). Sophomore Seth Byers (Cincinnati, OH/Cincinnati Colerain) scored his second and third goals of the year at 21:14 and 34:38. Sophomore Attila Schmidt (Akron, OH/Western Reserve Academy) assisted on both Byers scores.

Schmidt kicked off the second half scoring with his second goal of the season at 59:10. Byers and sophomore Ben Levy (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) were each credited with an assist. Schmidt notched his third assist of the contest at 62:07 on Levy’s first goal of the season. Levy led the 2004 Foresters with eight goals. Freshman Steven Stavropoulos (Vernon Hills, IL/Stevenson) assisted junior Juan Robledo (Chicago, IL/Kelvyn Park) at 72:38 on both players’ first career points. Senior Sam Figueroa (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) found the back of the net for the first time in 2005 less than a minute-and-a-half later off an assist from freshman Wade Torgeson (New Glarus, WI/New Glarus). Stavropoulos recorded his first career goal with 5:46 to play in the game. Sophomore Andrew Brendamour (Cincinnati, OH/Cincinnati Country Day) earned the assist before scoring the game’s final tally off a Figueroa pass at 87:25.

Sophomore Jacob Elperin (Highland Park, IL/Lake Forest Academy) recorded the team’s three saves and combined with freshman Sam Malmberg (Concord, NH/St. Paul's School) to blank the Prairie Fire.

Senior Jon Duke (Eugene, OR/Marist) put the Foresters ahead early on Sunday with unassisted goals at 14:15 and 33:02. The Red Hawks got on the scoreboard with 1:35 remaining in the first period and tied the score at the game’s 59:45 mark. Ripon scored the game winner 3:22 into overtime.

Lake Forest out-shot the home team 16-7 and had a dozen corner kick opportunities to their opponents’ three.

The Foresters will not play again until next Sunday’s (September 18) tilt against defending league champion St. Norbert College at 3:30 p.m.
