About the Author

 

Alexandra Ayala ‘09

 

Alexandra Ayala is a junior from Caracas, Venezuela. She is a biology major interested in going on to medical school or pursuing a career in neuroscience. For the past two years she has been part of the Women’s Rugby Team on campus. In the fall of 2006 she was a peer teacher for the FYIS106 Medical Mysteries: Neuroscience in Chicago class and is a current member of Dr. DebBurman’s Parkinson’s research lab studying alpha-synuclein degradation via the lysosome.

 

Chelsea Bueter ‘07

 

Chelsea Bueter graduated from Lake Forest College in 2007 with a degree in biology. Originally from Swisher, Iowa, Chelsea is currently attending graduate school at the University of Massachusetts.

 

Joseph Campagna ‘10

 

Joseph Campagna is a sophomore from Elmwood Park, Illinois. He is studying biology at LFC.

 

Danielle Clark ‘09

 

Danielle Clark is a junior from Las Vegas, Nevada majoring in chemistry and minoring in biology and psychology. She is a member of SAACs and participates in the LFC Chamber Orchestra. Danielle plans to pursue a career as a pediatric oncologist.

 

Clare Conlisk ‘10

 

Clare Conlisk is a sophomore from Winnetka, Illinois majoring in biology and minoring in art. She is a radio news writer and broadcaster for the College’s WMXM radio station, as well as a student ambassador. After graduation, Clare plans to become an orthopedic surgeon.

 

Shaun Davis ‘09

 

Shaun Davis is a junior from Shoreview, Minnesota.  He is majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry.  Since the summer of 2006, he has worked in Dr. Karen Kirk's lab studying telomeres.  Besides lab work, Shaun is an active member on the college campus.  He is an RA in Cleveland Young International Center and is also a member of SAACS, the Ultimate Frisbee team, and the Student Academic Advisory Committee for the Biology Department.  After college, he intends to pursue graduate school to earn a Ph.D.

 

Elizabeth Dean ‘09

 

Elizabeth Dean is a junior from Milwaukee, Wisconsin majoring in biology and politics and minoring in English.  In addition to her role in Eukaryon, Elizabeth is a member of Tri-Beta Biological Society and Alpha Phi. She is interested in the field of medical writing and hopes to pursue a career in medical journalism. 

 

Andrew R. Ferrier ‘08

 

Andrew R. Ferrier is a senior at Lake Forest College pursuing a major in biology and minor in theatre. Andrew is a native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada and a member of Lake Forest College men’s hockey team. He is currently working in the lab of Dr. Pliny Smith, which investigates the development of organisms, specifically the pharynx in C.elegans. Andrew’s future goals include: matriculating into medical school, writing a book, touring the world for 1 year and becoming a coach of a professional hockey team.

 

Nicole Fields ‘09

 

Nicole Fields is a junior from Libertyville, Illinois majoring in biology. She is a peer teacher and an active member of the LIT committee staff. After graduation, Nicole plans to become a physician

 

Mike Fiske ’10

 

Mike Fiske is a sophomore from Northbrook, IL majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry.  His interests are football, golf, and camping.  He also enjoys traveling and playing ping-pong.  Mike is a member of the Tri-Beta National Biological Honor Society and is currently conducting research in Dr. DebBurman's lab on Parkinson's disease.  He plans to attend medical school after Lake Forest College.

 

Chris Georgen ’07

 

Chris Georgen graduated from Lake Forest College in 2007 with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. He is currently applying to dental schools.

 

Anne Haas ‘07

 

Anne Haas graduated from Lake Forest College in 2007 with degrees in environmental studies and French. She currently works as a marine mammal trainer at Atlantis Marine World Aquarium in Riverhead, New York.

 

Ethan Helm ‘07

 

Ethan Helm graduated from Lake Forest College in 2007 with a degree in biology. Originally from Mabelvale, Arizona, Ethan spent several months after graduation volunteering on a medical mission boat in Guyana with World Outreach Fellowship Ministries. During his time at LFC, he successfully initiated the campus’ Invisible Children group and was largely responsible for the $20,000 raised by the group. In the future, he plans to pursue a medical career.

 

Spenser Hicks ‘08

 

Spenser Hicks is a senior biology major from Glendale, Wisconsin. Although yet unsure of his eventual career goal, Spenser has worked at the Lincoln Park Zoo as an animal behavior research intern.

 

Lisa Jeziorny ‘07

 

Lisa Jeziorny is an Illinois College of Optometry graduate student from Orland Park, Illinois. She graduated from Lake Forest College in 2007 with a B.S. in biology.

 

Thomas Johns ‘09

 

Thomas Johns is a junior from Chicago majoring in English and minoring in communications. He plans to pursue a career as a writer, and his work has appeared in the campus publications Tusitala and the Stentor.

 

Lokesh Kukreja ‘08

 

Lokesh Kukreja is a senior, biology and chemistry major, from Highland Park, Illinois. He is doing senior thesis in Dr. Shubhik DebBurman’s lab on Parkinson's disease. He is the president (07-08) of the Lambda Phi Chapter of Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society. After undergraduate degree, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in cell biology.

 

Krista Kusinksi ‘08

 

Krista Kusinksi is a senior from Newbury, New Hampshire. She is majoring in biology and plans to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner after graduation.

 

Stephanne Levin ‘09

 

Stephanne Levin is a junior from Northbrook, Illinois majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry.  She conducted research on animal behavior with Professor Glassman during the summer of 2006.  Stephanne has worked in a veterinary clinic for more than two years, and she plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

 

Maksim Meltser ‘09

 

Maksim (Max) Meltser is a junior from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, majoring in biology and computer science.  He has conducted research in Dr. Kirk's lab studying telomeres, and is a member of Eukaryon, the Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society, and the treasurer of the Future Health Professionals student organization.  He is also the Properties Master at the Lake Forest College Theater.

 

Kushal Modi ‘09

 

Kushal Modi is a junior from Little Rock, Arkansas. He studies chemistry and biology at LFC.

 

Terese Noe ‘10

 

Terese (Beth) Noe is a sophomore from Gurnee, IL, majoring in Biology.  Her interests are singing and reading.  She recently completed research on migratory stopover ecology of male American Redstarts as a Richter Scholar working with Professor Caleb Gordon at SWAMP.  She plans to attend veterinary school.

 

Jillian Olejnik ‘09

 

Jillian Olejnik is in her junior year as Biology major, including a double minor in chemistry and psychology. She is from Rockford, IL and will be studying abroad in Australia this spring. She has conducted research in Dr. Houde's lab on different aspects of guppy mating behavior. After graduation, she plans on going to graduate school to get a Master's degree in Animal Behavior or Marine Biology.

 

David Piper ‘08

 

David Piper is a senior studying biology. He is currently in the process of applying to dental schools. His paper, “A Review of ‘Prospective Study of Risk Factors for Erectile Dysfunction’ by Bacon et al.” explores the possible link between risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease and cancer to an increased prevalence of erectile dysfunction.

 

Shruti Pore ‘08

 

Shruti Pore is a senior from Gurnee, IL. She is majoring in biology and French with a minor in chemistry. She is currently working on her thesis about cell volume regulation in alligator erythrocytes. She is excited for her senior year at LFC and hopes that Eukaryon continues to grow in the years to come!

 

Emily Pospiech ‘09

 

Emily Pospiech is a junior at Lake Forest College from Hawthorn Woods, Illinois. She is majoring in chemistry and minoring in biology. Emily currently serves as the secretary for SAACS and Director of Scholarship for Delta Gamma. After undergraduate, Emily intends to pursue a Md. in the field of Pediatric medicine.

 

Lindsey Rockwell ‘09

 

Lindsey Rockwell is a junior at Lake Forest College. She is majoring in psychology and minoring in biology. Lindsey hopes to study communication disorders in graduate school and eventually work as a speech pathologist.

 

Lital Silverman ‘08

 

Lital Silverman is a senior at Lake Forest College from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, majoring in biology and minoring in studio art.  She is also a proud member of PRIDE, a scrumptious secretary in BBB, and an oh-so-erudite Writing Center tutor.  Since the summer of 2005, she has been conducting original research in Dr. Light's lab on the volume regulating mechanisms of red blood cells.  She plans to pursue a Ph.D. degree in neuroscience following graduation with the long-term goal of both conducting research and teaching the subject.

 

Lavinia Sinitean ‘08

 

Lavinia Sinitean is a senior who was born in Romania but lives in Chicago. She is majoring in biology and studio art and minoring in Spanish. Besides her research work at Northwestern University-Department of Endocrinology, she is a science-writing tutor for the LFC Writing Center. Lavinia enjoys traveling, doing research and developing photographs in the dark room. She is currently applying for the Fulbright to extend her iodine project in Bolivia after graduation. She is passionate about a career in international public health, hoping she can live and work in South America.

 

Alina Spivak ’07

 

Alina Spivak calls the city of Moscow, Russia her home.  She majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry.  In her Junior and Senior years of high school she worked at VIROTEK/EFOORA on research and development of an ELISA assay for the HIV virus.  In the summer of 2005, she conducted research in the field of cell biology studying regulatory volume decrease in alligator erythrocytes.  On campus, she was the Vice President of Future Health Professionals.  She is currently attending Rosalind Franklin medical school.

 

Laura Thilgen ‘09

 

Laura Thilgen is a junior from Batavia, Illinois.  She is majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry and history.  Last summer, she did research in a genetics lab at the University of Chicago concerning spermatogenesis and x-inactivation in Drosophila melanogaster (fruitflies).  She plans to get her Masters and pursue a career as a pharmaceutical representative for Abbott Laboratories.

 

Mithaq Vahedi ‘08

 

Mithaq Vahedi is a senior from New Delhi, India double-majoring in biology and chemistry. He currently serves as President of both the Bahá’í Campus Association and Future Health Professionals. Mithaq plans to pursue an MD/MPH.

 

Sina Vahedi ‘08

 

Sina Vahedi is a senior from New Delhi, India double-majoring in biology and chemistry. He is a member of Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society and the Bahai Campus Association. Sina plans to pursue a career as an MD/PhD.

 

Stephanie Valtierra ’08

 

Stephanie Valtierra is a senior from Libertyville, Illinois majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. She is a member of Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society and plans to enroll in either graduate or medical school after graduation.

 

Michael White ‘07

 

Michael White is a 2007 Lake Forest College graduate from Westminster, Colorado. He currently works as a lab manager here at the College and has plans to pursue a medical career in the future.

 

Michael Zorniak ’07

 

Michael Zorniak is from Chicago, IL. A Biology major and Chemistry minor, Michael was a member of Future Health Professionals and the treasurer of ßßß.  In the summer of 2005, he conducted research under the direction of Nancy Muma with a Discover Pharmacology Summer Research Fellowship in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, at the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine.  He worked on a senior thesis project with Dr. DebBurman.
