About the Author

 

Katrina Brandis’06

Katrina Brandis is a Lake Forest College junior from Portland (Oregon) majoring in biology with a minor in Chemistry.  Since her freshman Richter scholarship with Dr. Shubhik DebBurman (Biology), Katrina has worked the cell biology of Parkinson’s disease, a project that has evolved into her senior thesis, and progress in which she has presented at national meetings. Katrina plans to pursue a PhD after graduation.

 

Chelsea Bueter’07

Chelsea Bueter is a junior from Swisher, IA majoring in biology.  She is a member of the Eukaryon editorial board and also a member of the Lake Forest swim team.  She works with Dr. Caleb Gordon in the summers banding birds and currently is interning at the Field Museum with Dr. Jason Weckstein.  She plans to attend graduate school possibly in the field of forensic biology.

 

Kristen Endraske’06

Kristen Endrasake is a senior from St. Louis, Missouri with a major in biology and minor in psychology. She is in the Lake Forest College Chorus and Delta Delta Delta sorority. She has done research with Professor Kathryn Dohrmann in the LFC Psychology Department. She has worked in La Rabida Children’s Hospital as a psychology intern and has done psychology internship at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest. She plans to go into neuropsychological studies after she gradates.  She will be working under the supervision of a neurologist at the St. John’s Mercy Hospital in St.Louis during the 2006-2007 academic year.

 

Tamara Hibler’05

Tamara Hibler is a Lake Forest College graduate from Park City (Utah) who majored in both Biology and Economics. Tammy began working with Dr. Anne Houde (Biology) as a Richter Scholar and since then her behavioral research with guppies had evolved into a senior thesis, which she had presented at regional scientific conferences and written into a manuscript for publication. Tammy studied abroad in Australia her senior fall. Tammy is currently pursuing an MD in University of Utah Medical School.

 

Lisa Jeziorny’07

Lisa Jeziorny is a junior from Orland Park, IL majoring in biology. She is a member of the Lake Forest varsity softball and handball teams and she would like to become an optometrist.

 

Jaclyn Kobilka’09

Jaclyn Kobilka is a first year student from White Bear Lake, MN with a major in chemistry and a minor in French. She is a member of the Lake Forest Dance Team, and she would like to study abroad in Europe. She is thinking about many different career options including medical school or research in the fields of genetics or neuroscience.

 

Lokesh Kukreja’08

Lokesh Kukreja is a sophomore at Lake Forest College from Highland Park, Illinois. His intended majors are Biology and Chemistry. He is a member of SAACS, and tutors a student in General Chemistry course. During the summer of 2005, he researched in the lab of Dr. Shubhik DebBurman, who is his academic advisor. He studied the aggregation properties of alpha-synuclein protein in fission yeast cells to look for missing links of neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s Disease. He also works as a teller at the Highland Park Bank & Trust. He aims to further his studies in the field of biomedical research and pursue a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree after undergraduate study.

 

Crystal Lester’06

Crystal Lester is a junior from Memphis, TN with a major in biology and a minor in art.  She is involved in Alpha Kappa Alpha and the Baha’I Campus Association.  She was a summer intern at the University of Memphis and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.  After graduation she intends to work toward obtaining a PhD in biomedical engineering.

 

Stephanne Levin’09

Stephanne Levin is a first year student from Northbrook, IL with a major in biology.  She will be a Richter Scholar this summer and intends to become a veterinarian.

 

David Mann’05

David Mann graduated from Lake Forest College in 2005.  He is from Wauconda, IL and he majored in biology and minored in chemistry.  He was a member of Beta Beta Beta and worked in the Developmental Biology Lab with Dr. Diana Darnell.  He has also done clinical research at Rush University Medical Center with Dr. James Madura and is currently working towards becoming a doctor of medicine.

 

Lindsey McCurdy’06

Lindsey McCurdy is a senior from Polson, Montana with a major in biology.  She is a member of the Student Alumni Association and the Stentor.  During the summer of 2003 she worked in Diana Darnell’s lab.  Next year she will be attending nursing school at University of AlaskaAnchorage.

 

Michelle McKinzey’07

Michelle McKinzey is a junior from Des Moines, IA with majors in biology and English and a minor in chemistry.  She is a member of Garrick Players and is also a peer teacher for nonmajors.  She would like to pursue a career in science journalism.

 

Kathryn Michael’07

Kathryn Michael is a junior from Jamestown, ND with a major in biology and a minor in religion.  She is a member of the Lake Forest Choir and Circle K and she works for the Anne Carlson Center for Children.  She would like to pursue a career in the health field.

 

Arun George Paul’05

Arun George Paul graduated from Lake Forest College in 2005.  He is from Cochin, India and majored in biology and minored in chemistry and religion.  He was vice-president of interfaith and an on campus meditation leader. Arun is currently doing his MD/PHD at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

 

Jessica Price’06

Jessica Price is a senior from Hot Springs, AR with majors in biology and art history.  She is involved in the League for Environmental Awareness and Protection as well as Environmental Issues and Concerns Advisory Committee.  She has done undergraduate research in multiple areas including an internship in plant biology and conservation at the Chicago Botanic Garden, Parkinson’s disease research with Dr. Shubhik DebBurman, and a summer research training program in the division of biological sciences at the University of Chicago.  She is interested in getting a PhD in conservation biology.

 

Jennifer Riddle’07

Jennifer Riddle is a junior from Bloomington-Normal, IL with majors in biology and psychology.  She is a member of the Lake Forest softball team and would like to go into the field of neuroscience, focusing on addiction.

 

Chloe Salzmann’07

Chloe Salzmann is a junior from Elgin, IL with a major in chemistry and a minor in sociology.  She is vice-president of membership recruitment for Alpha Phi and for the past year she has worked as an office assistant for an emergency care physicians group.  She plans to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. 

 

Ruja Shrestha’07

Ruja Shrestha is a junior from Kathmandu, Nepal.  She is majoring in chemistry and working towards a minor in math.  She has worked in Dr. Shubhik DebBurman’s Lab, as a student assistant in the biology and chemistry departments and also in the special collections at the Library.  She would like to pursue a career in chemistry research.

 

Kimberly Silvers’07

Kimberly Silvers is a junior from Walton, IN with majors in biology and environmental studies.  She is a member of the Lake Forest softball team and also is a student athletic trainer.  She studied abroad in Australia during the summer and she would like to study how environmental chemicals affect certain hormones in animals

 

Alina Spivak’07

Alina Spivak is a junior from Moscow, Russia with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry.  Alina is a member of the Eukaryon editorial board and Future Health Professionals.  Last summer she worked with Dr. Douglas Light on cell volume regulation in alligator erythrocytes.  She has also worked at the Math and Science Tutoring Center and the Gordin Medical Center.  In the future she plans on becoming a medical doctor and opening a private practice possibly in the field of pediatrics.

 

Melissa Stevenson’06

Melissa Stevenson is a senior from Castle Rock, CO with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry.  She is a member of the Lake Forest College soccer team and Delta Gamma.  She conducted summer research with Dr. Shubhik DebBurman and plans to become a physician’s assistant.

 

Michael White’07

Michael White is a junior from Westminster, Colorado with a major in biology and minor in chemistry. He had an off campus job at the Winter Club. He had a summer research fellowship at Rosalind Franklin School of Medicine in 2005. He is looking forward to going into a MD and/or PhD program in Neuroscience after he graduates.

 

Chloe Wormser’06

Chloe Wormser is a senior from Northbrook, Illinois. She is majoring in biology and has a minor in chemistry. She is involved in horseback riding. She is a research student of Dr. Douglas Light’s lab and is currently working on a thesis related to cell volume regulation. She had been an assistant veterinary technician and a veterinary intern. She looks forwards to being a small animal veterinarian after she finishes graduate school.

 

Michael Zorniak’07

Michael Zorniak is a junior from Chicago, IL with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry.  He is a member of the Eukaryon editorial board and he is also the treasurer for Future Health Professionals.  He worked at the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine for the Discover Pharmacology Summer of 2005 Research Fellowship. He was a peer teacher for cell and molecular biology and would like to get a MD and possibly a PhD.
