Safety Tips

It is always wise to practice safe street smarts when navigating the city.

Basic Street Smarts:

  • Create an itinerary before you leave
  • Provide someone (who is not with you) with accurate details of where you’re going, when you’ll be back and your cell phone number
  • Walk with a friend or group
  • Stay alert and tuned into your surroundings (Turn off your iPod!)
  • Stick to well traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through parking lots and alleys
  • Keep your wallet/money in an inside, front pocket, not a back pocket
  • Do not wear shoes or clothing that restrict your movements
  • Bring back-up cab fare
  • Adopt a no-nonsense attitude (city face)
  • In an emergency, call 911 and Lake Forest College Security at 847-735-5555

On Buses and Subways:

  • Use well-lighted, busy stops
  • Stay alert - Do not doze or daydream
  • Maintain personal space
  • Watch who gets off with you - If you feel uneasy, walk directly to a place where there are other people
  • Stay alert and tuned into your surroundings (Turn of your iPod!)
  • Avoid traveling alone late at night or early in the morning
  • Trust your instincts!
