The Many Ways to Keep Up with College Athletics

Some sports fans just can’t get enough. There are highlights, tickers, hotlines, newspapers, magazines, and more. Even Lake Forest College is keeping up with today’s sports-crazed world. In case you haven’t seen it yet, the Foresters’ athletic Web site (www.lakeforest.edu/athletics) is one of the best in the Midwest Conference and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, if not in all of Division III. Results are updated quickly after each contest, and every student-athlete has his or her own page with a head shot, career statistics, and other biographical information.

The Forester Hotline 847-735–6131 is updated after each contest and includes game statistics and future contest information. This year we were thrilled to have the addition of WMXM 88.9 — The Forest (www.lfcradio.com) broadcast our men’s hockey games. The station will continue to broadcast next year and hopefully add football, basketball, and softball games to its lineup.

Annual Alumni Games

The older I get, the better I was…. That’s a phrase most athletes live by. Some of the most enjoyable times for the Forester Athletic Department are the annual alumni games. Seven events were hosted this year, beginning with two on Homecoming & Family Weekend. Over 35 former Forester hockey players dusted off their skates on that Friday as part of the weekend honoring the 1977–78 team’s Hall of Fame induction. The following morning, a dozen swimmers took to the pool in their alumni meet.

Former Forester basketball players also had opportunities to show that they still had some skills. The men took on the current team in a scrimmage prior to the season, and the women faced off against one another in January.

Most teams also designate one home game each year as Alumni Day, and a reception is held before or after the contest. If you’re interested in being part of next year’s alumni events, please feel free to contact the head coach of your respective sport. Contact information and team schedules containing alumni dates can be found on the Web site (www.lakeforest.edu/athletics), or you can call the Athletic Department at 847-735–5285.

Forester Athletic Network Plans Events

The F.A.N. Club (Forester Athletic Network) was established in 1995 and is comprised of alumni, family, and friends with a special interest in athletic programs at Lake Forest College. The primary mission of the F.A.N. Club is to promote school spirit, increase attendance at sporting events, and build enthusiasm for Forester athletics. The F.A.N. Club coordinates social activities (upcoming events include our 9th annual golf outing Thursday, August 5, and a Milwaukee Brewers bus trip Saturday, August 14) and keeps members informed about upcoming events, season results, and other Forester athletic news.

The secondary mission of the F.A.N. Club is to raise funds for special projects that enhance the College’s athletic programs and facilities. The Contributors’ Club has purchased the football scoreboard (2000), spectator and player benches for tennis and soccer (2002), and a scorers’ table for volleyball and basketball (2003). Future projects include outdoor recognition for soccer, softball, and tennis championships with an adjacent seating area and digital video equipment.

More information can be found at www.lakeforest.edu/activities/athletics/fan. Memberships are renewed annually June 1. Anyone joining this spring will not have to renew until June 2005.
