Dr. Nel Noddings discusses school reform 11/5
news story imageDr. Nel Noddings, a leading figure in the field of educational philosophy, will deliver the annual Ruth Winter Lecture at Lake Forest College titled “School Reform in a Democratic Spirit.” Dr. Noddings’ presentation will be held on Thursday, November 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel. The public is invited to attend free of charge. For more information please call 847-234-3100.

Noddings, renowned in both education and philosophy for her promotion of the “ethics of care,” believes that under the present reform movement, schools are focused too narrowly on economic success. "Dr. Noddings’ ethics of care philosophy emphasizes that education should prepare students for 'generous citizenship' as well as happiness in personal life and career endeavors,” says Professor of Philosophy Lou Lombardi.

An accomplished scholar and teacher, she is the author of nine books among them Happiness and Education (2003), Educating Moral People (2002), and The Challenge to Care in Schools (1992). Noddings is the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Child Education Emerita at Stanford University and also served as professor of philosophy and education at Teachers College, Columbia University.

The Ruth Winter Community Lecture is made possible through the generosity of the late Ruth Winter, who worked at the College from 1953 to 1973 as the director of cultural affairs. She brought many internationally renowned lecturers to the College during her twenty years of service. The lecture is also supported by the Philosophy Department and the Ethics Center.

The Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel is located on the College’s Middle campus at the intersection of Sheridan and College roads in Lake Forest. Campus is accessible via Metra.
