October marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the 30th anniversary of China’s post-Mao reform, and the 30th anniversary of the normalization of the US-China relationship. “The changes that have taken place during this period have not only deeply transformed every aspect of Chinese life, but also created profound impact in the world,” says Shiwei Chen, associate professor of history and chair of the Asian Studies Program at Lake Forest. “Today’s China, with its growing economic power and rising political strength, is positioned to become an even more important player in the 21st century international arenas. We are very pleased to have Professor Yang speaking on campus at this historical juncture.”

Dali Yang (Ph.D., Princeton, 1993) is Professor and Director of the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and books on the politics and political economy of China, including Remaking the Chinese Leviathan: Market Transition and the Politics of Governance in China (Stanford University Press, 2004).

This event is sponsored by the Christopher C. Mojekwu Fund for Intercultural Understanding, Departments of History, Politics, International Relations, Environmental Studies, and Asian Studies at Lake Forest College.

Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel is located on the College’s Middle Campus at the intersection of Sheridan and College roads in Lake Forest. Campus is accessible via Metra.
