Fred Van Sickle to discuss Lake Forest and the Depression 10/29
Lake Forest, Ill. – As part of a special panel bringing together long-time Lake Forest residents, Fred Van Sickle ‘83 will lead a discussion on Thursday, October 29 at 7 p.m. about the impact of the Great Depression on the North Shore town. The free event, titled “80 Years Later – Lake Forest and the Depression,” will take place in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel on Lake Forest College’s Middle Campus.

Several long-time Lake Forest residents, including former Mayor Frank Farwell, will join Van Sickle for a short discussion following the presentation to talk about their experiences of living in Lake Forest during the Depression.

Van Sickle, a third generation alumnus and former president for Alumni and Development at the College, will share the insights that he gathered while researching his senior thesis about Lake Forest and the Depression. He conducted interviews with 24 residents for the project, including Katherine Trowbridge Arpee, Jim Casselberry, Jane Warner Dick, Herman Dunlap Smith, Frances Pratt Strenger, Robert D. Stuart, Jr., and Gerard Verbeke. Read his 1986 article in Illinois Historical Journal about his research.

Van Sickle currently serves as the Vice President for University Development at Columbia University, and he also holds a doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
